I know this has been discussed a million times on a million different websites but I am just curious. Can I run regular hydraulic oil in the chaincase instead of buying special crap. I guess I never really gave hydraulic fliud a thought before but I have a bunch of it and it just occurred to me why not use it? Alot of guys swear by ATF and it is about the same consistency.
Any suggestions, yes, no, maybe?

Why not, It should be fine. I use the special crap, but I know a lot of guys who use whatever they have in the shop for oil as long as it is thin enough at cold temps, and they have all been just fine, so far, no problems.

It's less than $10 for the most expensive types of chaincase fluid......just
spend a few buck and get something good and designed for it!!!

I dot know alot about sled maintenance, but I put klotz lube in the chaincase. I've heard it's pretty good tho

just use dextron atf fluid, never had an issue in 15000 miles, used it in all my sleds!

I use the amsoil chaincase lube that is specifically designed for a snowmobile chaincase, but then again it I am sure it would work fine with 75w-90 meijer brand...lol It is just a sense of comfort I guess.

80-90 gear lube srx 10k miles, sxr600 6k no problems.

Doesn't really matter what oil you put in, in a chain drive system like a snowmobile you will break/wear out the chain LONG before there is any damage from the 'wrong' oil.
Also, think of it this way. In your typical chaincase there are two bearings, one on the jackshaft one on the driveshaft. They each have a partner bearing on the other side that is subjected to all kinds of horrible condition with no or very little lube. That other bearing is going to fail first, and when you replace that one, you usually have to take out the chaincase side also.

Never heard of hydraulic fluid being used as a lubricant. I would be very concerned with its temperature performance both high and low. Seems a simple and inexpensive worry free solution to just use one of the proper lubes suggested.

i have only ever used 80-90 gear lube and never had even the slightest issue, the expensive stuff just costs more. save a couple bucks and buy gas instead!!!!
