Friend of mine has a 2000 sxr 700 wouldn't idle and ran rough, also the secondary exhaust was glowing hot. I cleaned the carbs for him, (pilot circuit was plugged on 2 carbs) and it runs fine now but why would the exhaust have gotten so hot. It melted the rope on the pull starter. I haven't been able to ride it long enough, after I cleaned the carbs, to see if it will get that hot again. Compression is good and exhaust pipe appears to be clear of obstuctions. Any ideas?
was probally a mouse nest in the muffler, soak it with fuel and it will burn. the engine running just feeds the fire air and fuel.
Let us know how it runs and does now you cleaned the carbs.

Last year one of my friends who I've showed how to clean the carbs called me, with the same issue, he called me back a couple days later said he'd fixed it by cleaning the carbs. They ran fine the rest of the season for him.

Thanks, I'll give the fuel in exhaust a try, sounds like a good idea just to make sure there is not a mouse nest. The way he stores the sled, a mouse nest would not surprise me at all.
