Switching to Flatside Carbs in a 90 Phazer

OK, OK you guys have talked me into switching to the flatside world. I just bought a set off a 96 XT600.
Will gutting the airbox on these carbs help?

What would be a good starting point for jets in a sled in Idaho (2600 ft and up)?

I have done alot of jetting with Keihen dirt bike (single cylinder) carbs. What should I look for?

I too just got a 95 phazer 2. long track. started cleaning it up and i'm not going to put that airbox back on. What a mess. Where you at in idaho? Daring?

why are you switching to the flatslides? My 90 phazer has a midrange spudder that I've not been able to tune out. I've been all over the place trying to clean the mid range spudder up? it's like I have to change the pilot? runs good on the main- carbs are spotless,stock, reeds are perfect?
 
Yamaha made a replacement emulsion tube which helped fix that shudder (lean condition). The OEM nozzle has one 1.0mm hole (STD), Part #80L-14489-00-00 has two .9mm holes (OPT)
 
Thanks a bunch! I'll get 2 & try them. If it fixes it - that would be awesome. I've tried all last winter to cure! never posted complaint, just tried to fix! epic Fail!

The info came from a Yamaha bulletin.

I think in the later models of the II they fixed this problem. It has been a while since I have thought about it. Here is a link to another site where I was asking about jetting.

My 93 on a slow run back from the camp took a piston out, was running mid range as trails were rough and was following my girlfriend on our 340.
Running with faster sleds, never had a problem.
Just recently finished rebuilding the motor, switched to flat-slides as I plan to go with the Aaeen quiet pipe.
Yes it would have been simpler and easier to mod the OEM butterflies but I don't think the fix ever worked, I asked my local Yam dealer about it and they said they never heard of any problems with stock, sweeping the dust under the mat maybe?
 
I have a 90 PZII that I put flatsides on a couple years back, but because I'm always too busy I have never gotten the jetting right. I will be messing around with it, in the next couple days. Currently don't remember what I have for jets, but it's too rich. It stumbles really bad from 5/8 or 3/4 and full throttle, so I'm going to do some plug checking maybe tomorrow, but for sure Friday. No snow to ride here, except some on the lakes. I just need to pull into the garage first and double check the fan belt, since it seems to get a lot worse when it's hot.
