03 viper hard start & high hanging idle problems

I clean everything and adjust everything on this every year. pilots are clean. no dirt in carbs..even pulled the carbs off 2 times this year.

When it is dead cold you can use the choke to start it but not leave it on to long or it will die.

While it is hot at anytime after sitting you have to give it some throttle to get it started. this dont seem right.

the high idle down problem.

This is after a long run or quick hard runs it seems..I road this the same way last year with no problems.

It just wont come down to idle unless you use the choke. I even brought the idle down and no change.

I did read here it can be from the exhaust after a hard run but this just happen this year...very annoying :o|

what is going on here?
 
maybe the fuel screws are not the same? or is your choke within specs? sounds like carbs, clean but out of spec maybe.
 
throttle cable too tight?

my 02 runs/starts fine, still likes a bit of throttle on warm starts to fire right up
 
fuel screws are set a 1 7/8 but I guess 2 is better.

I a m going to try 2 turn
loosen the choke very loose
loosen the throttle very loose...

It hangs at 4000 and this sucks :o|
 
Air leak

Check for vacuum leaks throughout the intake side, including head gasket. My Viper requires a light touch to the throttle for warm starts also.
 
how many miles do you have on you clutch? over time they start to get notch in the clutch weights from wear and tear. your fuel screws sound right, just need a little free play for the choke and throttle, not a whole lot. there is a manual for the viper in the tech section for accurate specs for throttle and choke. start with those, you might as well check the clutch weights quickly while checking throttle and choke.

I had my clutches apart last year and checked things out.
never thought of the clutches would affect the idle. Why would the clutch hang the idle though? Are you talking about a notch in the rollers?

here is something else. while I flick the choke it brings it down then it will return to 4000.....I have to hit the choke 2-3 time real quick then it brings it down.

yeah i lost track of the hard starting and idling and started thinking too far, it does sound like carb issue but you already mention cleaning them. double check i geuss

Yea I pulled them 2 times thinking the pilots got dirty again...

Very clean....I guess I am going to check the turns again for the 3 time
 
If you search this topic "Hard to start when warm" you will find out that 95% Yamaha's are like this. Nature of the beast.
I find that 2 full turns works the best for eliminating idle hang.

I was searching this on both forums. I did read about this.

I have 4 sleds and they are all stock.. I had only one problem with the 01 sxr and I just adjusted it to 1 3/4. It does seems better...

So let me get this right...just put all of my sleds at 2 turns?

Some of the sleds say 1 1/2....1 7/8...ect

So if it works good for the sxr at 2 instead of 1.5 then the viper should be at 2 3/8 to even out the hang...

just thinking.... am I right....
 
I get what you are saying.
Every sled is different tho. My Viper seems to like 2 full turns out. I also have my Vmax at 2 turns out.They both had some hang so instead of doing adjustments at 1/8 turns (lazy) I set them both the same. This corrected both my sleds.
You may find this will work on all yours as well. But if the Sxr is fine at 1 3/4 then I would leave it.The spec in the manual is just that, a spec. Real world tuning is always different book tuning.
 
i'd look at exhaust donuts and carb boots - sounds like an air leak to me. if you do a plug check you can probably isolate it.
 
If the y pipe is cracked, could that cause it too? My dad had the same problem today and after looking it over i noticed the crack (among other various unrelated items). It seems he needs to do some maintenance...
 
Sounds like you're on the right track. Since flipping the choke helps, it's a lean condition. If you've always ran the fuel screws at 1-7/8 and it worked fine, then something else is causing it and needs to be found. Could be an air leak, or something is being missed when you clean and is still blocking the pilot circuit. When you clean the pilots, do you hold them up to a light and make sure you can see a round hole through them? Did you remove the fuel screws and spray cleaner through the hole where the pilot jet goes to clean that passage? I sound like a broken record sometimes about pilot jets, BUT I've had many, many times that cleaner and air didn't get them clean. I usually have to run a small wire from a wire brush into them and work it around to loosen the gunk up, and then follow with cleaner and air. If you can see a nice round hole through them, then you know they're clean.

An exhaust leak like mentioned above can definitely cause high idle, I've had that happen before on my Exciter.
 
well I set 3 of my sleds to 2 turns and it seems like they like it better. I have to get a run in tom to see where they are at.

Yes I always look through my jets to see light through them. I always use carb cleaner and compressed air to clean my whole carb....nice and clean...

I will look for a crack on my viper. I did not see any tonight.

I really am starting to think with the newer gas it is leaning the sleds out some.

seems like the sleds are just not like last year....

I hope the 2 turns fixes the problem on all 4... ;)!
 
Regarding the problems you've been having, I had the exact same thing happening to my 02 Mountain Max last year, it drove me crazy! Brought it to a buddy of mine (Yamaha Technition), he went on to discover that the engine was out of line. He did a full allignment on the engine and clutch, replaced the jackshaft bearing and the Max runs like a dream now. Just a suggestion in case nothing else works out for you.
