SRX540, Got your PM. Never owned one of these but do know a guy that did. He tried changing things up with aftermarket parts and non SX cylinders/pistons. BIG!!!! mistake. Sled didn't last for a week. Went back to OEM and genuine EX-SX parts and all was well. It was a long track. Fast m-efer.
Tony (YAMMIEGOD) owns one (I think) I would follow his lead here.

Thats still down on compression anyway. stock compression is 155lbs! Yamaha did their homework on this sled and they run very well without messing with them, the only weak point in the drivetrain is crappy stock clutching.

Again...thanks guys, but like opsled says ...he knows a guy.....didn't work out.......whats that mean.?..what was the issue? , who was the guy? Thats all I'm hearing fromanyone...well I would go yamaha .....you'll have issues....etc.....what issues....?????what problems......Sounds weird to me.Nobody can be precise...
And yes phazerguy....compression should be 155....and I will probly end up with that as I already have 145 after a half hour of riding...usually takes a few hours to break in completely. I'm sure I'll be fine.....Let u guys know though if something does goes wrong. I will be speceific. Cheers !!!

Dude, For starters it ain't your thread. If you have Q???'s ask your own before jumping on someone who isn't responding to you.
Next, The EX/SX is a one year animal that not many have much experiance with. Many have never seen one. I have never owned or ridden one but did share what I've seen. If that ain't good enough for you???? Then make your own history.
See the problem with guys like you (as I see it) is that if you have to ask simple Q's about what pistons you should buy you don't know enough to fix it anyway. So what's the point?????
OEM is what was said to be the best here. Don't like it? Do what you want. You want all the answers given (for free) on a machine that few have seen and fewer have actually worked on then complain because it ain't good enough. Good luck getting a responce on your next Q.
To elaberate on the one and ONLY ONE!! I have ever seen personally.
Friend, bought 93 LT, EX, SX, 570 for his son. Wanted more HP. Bought a set of PSI twins at the Milwaukee snowshow (used) for it. (Gave away the OEM pipe in the mean time) They were for an EX-II and he had nothing to go on to set them up. Put them on and kid promptly burned a cylinder. EX/SX cylinders are EXPENSIVE and hard to find. He dicided to go cheap. Bought a nice used set of EX II cylinders off Ebay. Bought Weisco pistons for them. Put it together. Air box wouldn't fit because of the different cylinders. Ran pods instead. Burned both cylinders this time in less that 1 hr of trail riding. Then wanted to buy a complete EX II engine I had that was perfect to put in it. I said no. Nothing is the same. It will bolt in but that is as far as it goes. CDI is even different. Told him to fix what he had. Replate bad EX/SX cylinder, get new OEM pistons, rings, gaskets and put it back to stock. Dump the PSI's and get back your OEM pipe. I told him it is an SX, a 1 year sled worth twice as much (at least) as any other EX in the same condition. If it is bastardised with non stock /wrong parts it will be just another abortion. A misused misfit. He built it back to stock and it never failed again.
Good enough?????????????
If not do what you want.. but don't ask my op.

SRX540 said:Man no one would answer me at excitersx so i came here, you guys must have snow and are out riding!!!
Are you kidding me?? No body would answer you at excitersx.com?? I guess the the conversation we had dont count. I answered your post the same day and phazerguy did the following day. Looky here
Now, personally i have no problem running the wiseco's but i know that i will be letting that sled warm up 100% before i would even start to ride. Wisecos are manufactured with a great deal of silicone in them and expand a great deal. That is the problem with them. They expand faster than the cylinders do.
The problem most guys have is they go and hit a bar or restaurant and when it it is time to hit the trails, the guys with stock engines probably tare off onto the trails before the entire cooling system is up to temp and the stock parts can handle it as they dont expand as fast. But now Jonny impatient with the wisecos sees his buddies tare off and he thinks he has to head out too, the problem is once he grabs the throttle real hard and heats the piston up it squeaks on the 4 corners (cold seize) and then he says that wisecos are junk. Wisecos were made for the racer and the rider that pays attention to the details. It is not an OEM piston, nor are they advertised as such. if your just a "ricky racer" and dont know much about engines and thermal dynamics they will catch you off guard sooner or later.
I have no problem running wisecos in any of my machines however i prefer to run the stock components as i have a large family and often lend a sled to one of my 7 brothers and i dont want to take a chance on them not warming up the sled enough.

crfbikerboy said:the only thing I've herd that actually makes sense ...is the weisco's are forged ...so they have tighter tolerances and therfore you need to warm up the engine properly , or you might cold seize it, due to the fact that the cylinder must warm up and expand as much as the piston which warms up quicker. That in mind the piston will expand quicker with less tolerance making it very tight until the cylinders warm up to match....can someone confirm this , or am I off the page here..... any comments to add would help all of us on this topic of pistons ...Forged pistons have tighter tolerances because they expand less....so they are tight when cold.....Thats what I understand, but could be wrong....
Wisecos "when cold" actually have more clearance than a stock piston because they expand so much. Stock components dont expand near as much therefor they have a tighter clearance (when cold). When the engine is at operating temp the clearance should be the same.
Also contrary to popular belief, just because a piston is cast dont make it less ideal for a performance application. Yamaha happens to use some of the best pistons out there. If you are into building automotive engines you might be familiar with the term Hypereutectic. It is a cast hi performance piston process that is similar to how yamaha has the pistons made. You can read more about the technology here. That artical is more for 4 stroke engines but the technology still applies to the sleds.

I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE IT CLEAR ON HOW MUCH I ENJOY BOTH THIS YAMAHA SITE AND EXCITERSX.COM. I would not have been able to complete a few projects without the help and guidence of the great people on these two sites and the vintagevmax.com site.
Opsled does make a good point about guys that come on these sites and talk to us like they we are dealers and owe them something, but people need to understand that THE GUYS THAT HAVE SUCH GREAT INFORMATION ON THESE SITES DONT GET PAID AND DO IT FOR THE FUN OF IT TO HELP OUT LIKE MINDED RIDERS LIKE US. So please, please dont be rude to them because guys such as myself that try to contribute to posts and help other guys need information when we need it. The typical guy that comes on here asking info because he doesnt want to pay money at a dealer or small sled shop irritate me to no end. The quality people are not on these sites for YOUR benefit, treat them with respect and thank them a few times for information at the very least.
Thanks for the info guys and posting on this thread, hopefully i get it put together and terriorize some 800's!!!!!

I just had to go read my last post of this thread as I wasn't aware of how I wrote it...tone wise I mean .Again if it sounded bad...sorry. I also love this site and help where I can. I love to share knowledge. That being said, I was just hoping to find someone that new more on this topic than me.... Which speednutt has just answered me in full explanation....that all I was looking for. thanks .
And as far as oplsed goes........your arrigant and your comment was not called for at all. Guys like me trying to find a real answer is what this site is for.....to talk and find answers and share comments. If u can';t answer ...than go away, don't get made because it wans't enough...Geez. I was asking for more detail, is that a bad thing.?...nobody was specific until speednutt answered. I do thank all for comments , but wanted more.... Just trying to educate myself and anyone reading this thread.

Dude, I'm arrogant??????????? Can't spell it so?????????
I'll quit there cuz it's to easy.
Anywho. It was you who called me out as an example of your frustrations. You wern't getting enough imformation and you wern't getting the answer you wanted.
Not my fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Told what I know because the questions were asked and if there is something in my brain that may have value to someone else they are more than welcome to it. This mind has absorbed endless amounts of info the same way by others that were willing to share with me but even if it was worthless info I would not call them out and sa it wasn't enough. I'd search elsewhere an not burn a bridge that I may need to cross in the future. It's a term called courtesy. Look it up. It will help you get answers.
SRX540 hit the nail on the head with the generosity displayed here and in many other arenas. It makes the world go round. Even if the gift is something you can't use don't throw it back in the givers face. It wrecks the system of generosity.
A quote from Will Smith in the movie Men in Black comes to mind.
"Don't want nothin. Don't start nothin, Won't ne nothin."
So if you can find anything in my responses to the original questions in this thread that were "arrogant??, boorish??, or just plain old out of line you would have a point.
So show me your point?????????????
opsled
PS, I ain't pissed at anyone. Been down this road before. Just stating my OP on manners. All of what I know about the EX/SX has been said.
Good luck to those who have one. Wish I did myself.

I KNOW ALOT ABOUT THE EXCITER SX, I HAVE TESTED THE CRAP OUT OF MINE WITH THE STOCK CLUTCHING, MY CLUTCHING, UPDATED VMAX 600 SECONDARY, SX STOCK PIPE, BENDER SINGLE, AND NOW PSI TWINS. PHIL IS DEAD RIGHT, THIS IS A ONE YEAR SLED AND HAS NOTHING IN COMON WITH THE EXCITER EXCEPT NAME. I POSTED DON,T RUN CRAP IN THIS SLED. I CAN,T BE MORE PLAIN THAN THAT. I ALSO POSTED SHURE YOU CAN RUN EXCITER WIESCO PISTONS, BUT THEY ARE NOT YAMAHA EXCITER SX PISTONS. YOU GUYS ARE THICK HEADED SOMETIMES. 3:16 (yammie tony)

oh know don,t have enough with opsled, guys very sharp and has great info.GUYS LOOK, HAVE TO UNDERSTAND YOU DON,T HAVE TO HAVE THE SLED TO HAVE ALOT OF KNOWLEDGE. PHIL (opsled) HAS KNOWLEDGE BECAUSE HE BEEN AROUND SLEDS PROBLEY ALL HIS LIFE. I CAN TELL YA HIM AND I HAVE BUTTED HEADS LIKE BROTHERS BUT I RESPECT HIS POSTS. LET ME ALSO POST HE DON,T NEED ME TO FIGHT FOR HIM EITHER. NOW there are some guys out there i guess you have to just read their posts when ya see them and you decide if ya want that info. I THINK YOUR BETTER OFF WITH THE YAMAHA PRIMARY. 3:16 (yammie tony)

I also think your better off with the yamaha primary. I have tried the polaris, it works, but not as well as the yamaha. Instead of the stock weights try yammiegods 8ab weights, they work great. I have also tested an sx with 8bu-10's. they work great, currently I am testing one with 48gram heavy hitters, so far they are working the best of anything I have tried.
