Racing my cousin down the trail and all the sudden I hear a loud rattle and clanking. Lostall power and then the sled died. I have a few vids if how it sounds and really need you guys on this one. And to top it off my Internet is down so im on my phone now. I'll update this post as soon as I can get the vids up. Not a good start to the weekend. :(

Thinking it's crank bearing. But not sure.

Time to tear it down. Did you look at the plugs yet? Know what cylinder? Make sure you take lots of pics for the guys to help. The more info the better. CCC

Main rod bearing prob the center.. You will need a crankshaft, piston, rings wristpin and bearing. And hopefully NOT a cylinder too. sucks!

SOunds like a great time to learn how to work on yamaha two strokes! Its knowledge that will save you lots of cash the rest of your life, plus I really enjoy wrenching on these thing.

Thanks everyone. The primary is frozen and I can't even pull the recoil. If you see in the vid towards the end the primary comes to a complete stop. That was on it's own. No kill switch.

How much money are we talking for a new motor ??

not gonna know until you crack it open to see what went wrong. You can rebuild your motor most likely but again we cant tell till you crack it open. Id say if you only need a crank plust piston and head you should beable to find used for around 600 buck. Just a guess i havnt priced anyting out just a guess. I would see about sending out your crank for rebuild dont get a used crank since the vipers seem to go through cranks more often..

Ouch bud thats to bad!!!! Your going to have to get in the motor for any kind of real help. Might as well tear her down and find out how bad! Take some pics of all of the cylinders pistons and such and post back. We can help find the cause!

I'm thinking about taking the heads off and just looking. I really don't wanna bring it to a dealer

You'll want to drain your coolant before doing this if you haven't already done so.

Start It?

If You Knew It Was Damaged, Why Did You Start It Time And Time Again? Not A Good Decision In My Book.

It's a mess. Bringing it in. Guy told me worst case scenario is 2,000-$3,000 for a full rebuild. Oem crank, new seals gaskets bearings , cylinder sleeves, pistons dual ring setup etc etc. Is it even worth it? Considering it will have the same typical crank seal bearing issues as it did before?

Only started it once. That was because I though at first it was the clutch because of how it just bogged down and stopped. It didn't cross my mind I just destroyed the motor. Otherwise I wouldn't have touched anything

I would do the rebuild myself, but thats just me. You can get the parts on here, and get a rebuilt crank for MUCH cheaper than 2000 bucks, if thats what its going to cost.

Don't rebuild it without the aftermarket head upgrade. KNOWN issue with Viper overheating while running slow. If you don't think so, tell the rental company in Colorado that lost 20 in a week....roflmao!

Found this out from the local Yamaha dealer AFTER my girlfriend raosted mine (2003 Viper with 828 miles)

pull the motor out completely and put it on your bench, tear it down yourself and learn how to build it back up. I had no idea what the inside of an engine looked like till i purchased a blown srx 700 a few years ago. I was referred to this site by someone local and its been the best source of information! There are many diagrams and how 2s on how to tear and rebuild an engine. I am confident enough to now tackle any issues with my sled. DO IT YOURSELF, AND HAVE FUN DOING IT! POST ANY QUESTIONS ON HERE(AFTER YOU USE THE SEARCH TOOL TO FIND POST WITH PEOPLE THAT HAVE ASKED THE SAME QUESTIONS THAT YOUR ABOUT TO ASK!!!
