My 98 Vmax 700 will not idle without keeping throttle up to about 1/4 throttle...and low end bogging, need to pin it and get it up to 6000 rpm just to hold 30 mph on the trails.

Any ideas what might be causing this and ideas for a fix?

I checked compression today and it was 115/115/0...the suspect cylinder looks as if there was oil spitting out between the cylinder head and the cylinder.

Could this just be a blown head gasket?

Can I check for this myself? looks like there are about 15 nuts to get the cylinder head off...

If it is just a a blown gasket can i do the repair myself?

Or should I just hand it over to the mechanic because I am a newbie?

you will never learn if you dont try!!!!

there is enough support here, and enough info in the tech pages that you should have no issue at all with replacing a head gasket......

Go for it!!!!

Bad news its a melted mag side piston top..ring is still in place.

Mechanic is tearing it down to see if the chrome plating on the inside of the cylinder was damaged and needs to be replaced as well..put up a new thread on part 2 of the saga..
