Fuel pick up in tank floating?

Put a used tank on my SX 700 this week and it would not run with half a tank. Drug it in the shop today and noticed the pickup was mostly out of the fuel? I pushed it back down and primed cylinders with gas/oil and it started and died again. Was sticking out of the gas again. Is some thing supposed to hold it down? Tank was sitting in a warm shop for 3 days before installed.

Hmm, are you talking about the intank fuel filter? Usually the paper inside soaked with gas holds it down but the hose may be old and really stiff. So I would replace the hose and I curve it so its sits on the bottom befor I push it on the barb.

In addiiton to what motorhead said, maybe the filter/pickup is plugged somewhat and somehow holding air, thus making it float.

This next idea please don't take the wrong way, but are you certain it's the pickup that you see, and not the float for the fuel level gauge (not sure if you have electric fuel gauge)? If this is the case and the pickup is down in the tank, can you tell if fuel is getting to the pump? Did the mice get to the pulse line that runs from the engine crankcase to the pump? Is the vent line for the tank plugged?

If the pump/pulse line is good and working, might have to pour the gas/oil mix in cylinders a few times to get the pump to pull gas from the tank and fill the carbs enough to run on it's own, especially since the system has been openened up, and if it's been awhile or last year since it's been run and the carbs may have drained/evaporated.
