this 97 vmax has been run with a belt off of my 04 viper s and it seemed fine except it rev up to 9500 and im prety sure it should stop at 8500 so i went to yamaha got a branew belt put it on and did a lap around the yard and when i went to stop the sled still wanted to move so much that if u hold the brake it will stall. put the viper belt back on and engages at 3700 but still revs to 9500 is it the wrong belt or does my secondary need to b put in a stiffer setting its on the 3rd hole

the viper belt should be an 8dn. the stock belt for the vmax is probably an 8ch. the 8ch is a bit shorter than the 8dn and you would have to shim the secondary to accomodate. the overrev with the 8dn would have to do with rubber compound and length.

you can convert your primary to run the 8dn by adding weight to the weights in the clutch and possibly a roller change, as well as shimming the secondary.

either way, the secondary needs an adjustment.

actually, the 8dn belt is the same length as the 8ch belt, the difference is the hardness of the belt, the 8dn is a harder compound belt than the 8ch, therefore if it is 10 degrees or colder outside use the 8ch, above 10 degrees use the 8dn, you can try to loosen the secondary to a smaller degree, but, without knowing what the clutch is set at on both ends of the secondary spring it is hard to know what degree it is at now. from the factory I have seen brand new belts that are off as much as 1/4" in length, so the best thing to do when buying a belt is to bring along a cloth tape measure and measure a few belts to get the one that will work best for your sled.

your almost right, rj21. actually the 8ch is shorter than the 8dn, It is also a little wider and also is thinner than the 8dn! The 8dn is made of a harder compound and therefore your sx will rev a bit higher with it installed! If using the 8dn you need to install a heavier rivet in flyweights and put sec. to 70* so it will grab better!

the sled is bone stock so the only thing that has change is the belt and i took the secondary aprat and put new plastick sliders in it so is mt secondary to tight

i just took the secondary off and put the spring into the #1 hole on the main peace of the seconardy and put the connecting plate a 6 put the belt on and it rev out at 85 witch is nice but when u go to stop the belt starts squaling and the seld want to move and if i hit the brake and hold it it will stall. When i checked the belt it was super tight and wasnt sitting like it should b in the secondary a mm or to above the sheve its actually 3 or 4 mm under do u think i just have the wrong belt

you got somthin screwed up in your sec.you should have tension against the belt in the sec. that will force the belt up. If you have that tension than you have the wrong belt.....What belt # do you have on it? 8dn....8ch....89L.. aftermarket? Any of these 3 will work with your sled, I would get one of these and put on it, then you can tune it in from there!

8ch76410000 yami when i first pulled the secondary apart the spring was in both #3 possion then i changed it to 1 and 6 and still the same thing and the belt isnt even sitting right its perfectly flat to the top of the sec. and i think if it went up more it would b even tighter do u think the belt could b made wrong cause the viper belt works fine it just rev out at 9500

In the back of the sec. there are three little bolts.... take em out and remove the washers ,,,and put back...theey are adjustment screws. that will take care of your squeeling problem ..you should be good to go! the 8ch will sit flush in your sec. the 8dn will sit above, that is normal!

took the shimes out mad it a little better but its still to tight and when i change the spring setting it doesnt run right i hav it set a 3 and 3 and it runs perfect until u want to stop when u do the seld wants to keep moving and it starts to bog if u hold the break could the belt just b made wrong

You might have a loose motor mount and your center to center is too long. I'm sure somone here knows the spec.

Ok - yam lover the next thing you check is those adjuster bolts that you took the washers off ,. they may be wore down too much . Get new bolts and reinstall!

thats what i was thinking the plate that those blots hit had a pretty good grove in it so i filped it over can u tell me how long the bolts r thanks

Ya know... I forgot that I had to that a couple years ago. I took the plate and flattened it on an anvil, installed it flipped over and bought 3 new bolts. And my belt adjusted way better after that.
