Yaaaaaaaamahaaaaaaaa Rocks! Buds got 800, need some 700 tips

Hey all love that I found this forum. I,v had my 97 700 SX for two years going into my 3 rd. I bought it with 1400 km, Ya 1400 km, The thing was babied and absolutely MINT. Now I have been trying to figure out what I could or should do to this sled to boost the ponies (not that I was ever dissatisfied) My budies both bought 800 MXZ's and also bought some big Lips to go with those 800's. What can I do without taking it to a shop for a month to get a little more out of it. This sled is 100 percent stock, even track. Still only has 2800 km on it. Also I was told to setup the clutchs, is that something I can do? I am very versed with the tools but have not ever adjusted a clutch before nor can I seem to find info on how to do it. I think I need a new belt or the clutch needs adjustment as I'm sure my belt is sitting below spec at the moment.

Any help from my fellow Yamaha Sledders is appreciated.
 
The stock tracks suck eggs. Triple is almost a waste if you've still got the stock Yokohama .75" track on there. You'll make lots of power and it'll go to sitting and spinning, instead of moving the sled.

If you're going to stud, a Camoplast 9830 is a great choice, you can run 1.25" Extreme Max studs, other brands vary how they measure, just get that particular brand's recommendations.

SLP's and CPR's pipes seem to be darn popluar, as well as Bender's. Get th clutch set up from TY though, it's all been tried and improved on already.

At that point, you should be about even with those 800's, if they are still stock by then! Of course, you could leave yours stock and no stop when they go to fill up, and get another 30 miles down the trail first...lol
 
If you throw a set of triple pipes on it along w/a deeper lug track, nobody will be able to smack that grin off your face! I don't have any sx700s around here w/triple pipes to tell you which ones work and don't work, but a friend has a sxr600 w/triple hauck pipes/setup, and he's no faster than my brothers 500 xtc twin! Maybe don't go w/hauck's setup. My .02
 
Hey thanks guys, I'v been looking into Mrsled's sugestions with reeds, silencer bore and head gasket mods. They are all small in the garage projects but one thing I could not find is how much horsepower to the track those will bring? I think the reeds notch and the silencer bore i will do, head gasket mod I'm not sure if that is worth all the work?

And vmaxjohn, your right the stock track sux and I will replace it but not this year as that seems to be a big job to re and re a track on these.

Also Pipes, I think I will look into a set for this sled asap. (Spin my crap track even faster)

Also the clutch, I think I'll take it to my buddies shop and let him play with that.

I WOULD do the head gasket mod, because it is not hard, and will be undetected to the average person(especially a doo)
I would NOT monkey with your own clutching unless it is simply for sport. As VJohn stated--these are not new sleds, and many have done the homework over the last six years to make them run.(dont reinvent the wheel)
I had mine set up the same as Mr Sled mentioned, and I will tell you many many folks were surprised Zero to say 85ish mph, but if you want to run wit those 800's on top you best consider some pipes. As far as pipes go: Hauck / Cpr (same) are very good and the 600 vs 500 post is a big surprise. (The 600 must be down a cylinder)
If you are looking for used pipes CPR/Hauck, Bender and SLP are great choices.

Sometimes prepackaged clutch kits are a let down. Slapping in parts never wins, find tuning a good set up will. A TY set up has been tried by more than a few folks in different conditions, and is by and large proven. Plus, tuning help is a few key strokes away ;)

A triple piped 600 should go by a single 7! But, on top end, a 'kit' can take away top end, and a stock XTC500 has lots of it. Top end is where Yami clutching shines.

A well tuned sled that can hook up might get beat by a bigger sled, but will always keep you smiling :)
 
John, I'm not sure I'd go as far as saying slap on parts "never win" as some kits, such as those from Jeff Simon are pre-setup and a lot of guys have great success with them. He seems to actually know what he is doing and sells kits that he himself has tested and gotten to work. It would be good to know how to do things yourself, however, as it is very useful down the road.
 
Trust the mods in the tech tip section as Mr Sled said.
I have a 2000 SX700R and did the reed spacers, two layers of head gasket removed, bender silencer and clutch kit. Whent for a little test run yesterday and fell right off the sled because the take off was sooooo much faster than stock. The sled hooked up good and took of like a rocket.
You may not beat your bud on top speed but you will make him wonder out of the whole. Good Luck!!!
 
What is the factory Yamaha clutch setup for top end speed? It sounds to me if I re-clutch I will get bottem end torque and lose a little top end. Am I right with that or not?
 
J, suppose you bought a prepackaged kit from Jeff Simon, who I respect and admire alot, and would love to pick his brain...Then you change one thing, like reeds. Then maybe a little bump in compression...now you're over revving? What the hell! A stock SRX just went by yours, what's going on?

Then Jeff comes over and tunes your kit for you, makes countless tiny adjustments till it's spot on all through the speed range. Now you're smoking modded SRX's! So, was a prepackaged kit spot on for you? nope.

What I'm getting at, is that a sled is unique unto itself, how it's broken in can make the difference of a few hp, maybe more on the RX1. What I propose is that Jeff's kit will probably be the best kit out there for the RX1, but can be fine tuned for even better performance.

All it takes is a couple small improvements in efficiency to throw off a complete working system, and if you know how to readjust your clutches to accomodate, there will be no suprises at the local grudge races, or on the trail. :)
