My 1999 Yamaha V Max 600 sx hit 10,000 miles this weekend. Every thing on the the sled is original, except for the track and a few idler wheel bearings.
I have checked the clutches and the suspension parts for obvious wear and have not found any. I am mainly worried about the motor.
Is there any thing that I should do the motor soon? Rebuild?
I did a compression test and it is around 135 on all 3 cylinders
I also did a leak down and its less that 10 % on all 3
Thanks

Have you checked the top end? pistons and dual rings would be the first thing I would do. Your way over due. Compared to the norm which is around 5k

I had the head off to replace the head gaskets, still had cross hatching in the cylinders. The jugs have never been pulled. Im guessing every body is gonna say Pistons and Rings should be done as soon as possible?
Yes pistons and rings is probably what I would do. Many will last miles and miles but why chance it. Took mine apart at 7400 miles. Had a crack in the piston skirt. Put all new pistons, rings, and gaskets in. Put it back together and kept riding. Also maybe check out the driveshaft and jackshaft bearings to make sure those aren't getting rough. Open up the chaincase and make sure everything is good inside along with putting new oil in it. Replace clutch springs and bushings maybe. Clutch springs are probably worn out for sure. The ramps on my secondary on my 97 were getting wore down so I just replaced those. Also check out all the bushings in the rear skid for wear. It's all your call completely. Just hate to see you break a ring or have a driveshaft bearing go out and ruin your season.
Took my 97 sx 700 apart with around 10k on it and still had cross hatch on the walls. Measured everything and put the ORIGINAL pistons back in with new oem rings and a quick hone. That engine is bullet proof.

You will have cross hatch because that nic plating is very hard the cyls really don't wear compared to the pistons.
you asked so were telling you i would pull top end down and check piston skirt spec for wear see if your still in tolerance and check blow by,and maybe do rings wile your in there.
but i gotta say IF then numbers you posted are accurate that engine looks healthy still.

Thanks guys for the help. It is going to get a top end pretty soon once I get some cash saved up. Should I do any thing with the crank?
I would be willing to bet your primary clutch sheaves and rollers are worn out. If the sheaves are not flat and smooth, your on course for cracking the sheave and possible spider damage.
I would also bet all of your suspension bushings are worn out. I had my rear skid apart to weld the torque arm and there were no bushings remaining, that was at about 6000mi. There are also bushiings at the bottom of the ski spindels that were worn away on my sled. On www.partspitstoponline, you can look at exploded part pictures and compare to see everything your missing.
I would replaced all your idler bearings, and your driveshaft and jackshaft bearings. You don't need to go to Yamaha for these. In Osseo, MN there is a place called "Cutters" that deals only in bearings and they cost a fraction of factory bearings for higher quality.
You may not need all of this, but tear it down this spring and go through it once, you wont have any worries for another 10k.

Depending on how deep you think you need to go wotmode had some good suggestions that should be considered.
again depending on how deep you think you need to go and $$ spent yes crank seals are a very good idea fast burn down if one leaks goes bad.

Just to add, inspection of the pistons (removed) will tell you a lot about the overall condition of the engine.

I blew the track off of it last year so when I put a new track on this fall I reinforced the W arm and went completely through the skid. To my a amazement the bushings and most of the wheel bearings were still tight and didn't need replacing. The drive shaft bearing on the speedo side was another story, it was cracked all the way around and had lots of play in it, it maybe had 10 miles left before it failed. The gears and chain have lots of life left in them. The rollers and finger weights on the primary look good but its going to get rebuilt this spring since I am getting a BAD over rev right now. The only thing that I know it needs are skis, They are worn through. I think one of the reasons this sled is in such good shape is because a 70 year old man drove and maintained it for the first 8000 miles of its life
Thanks for the help so far guys

Never really bought into that whole senerio about building these motors every 3-5 k depending on who you talk to.I've got 15 K on mine and I figure I'll ride it the way it is until it dies.Even with a fresh build it's not worth anything to anyone and I've got my moneys worth out of it already.Time for a change anyway.
I would suspect that the one with the cracked piston skirt had a touch of snow ingestion although it's just a guess.
Put it this way I would sure not park it at 10K because I didn't have the money to build it.That's how much I trust these motors and I still ride the crap out of it like I did when it was new.JMHO.The money I saved over the years(3 builds worth) I put in the fuel tank.
