Ok, Viper has new cylinder and piston along with new rings for all three pistons. Carb set rich with 3.5 on needles. Bender Opticool gasket for head issue. Sled has under 900 total miles on it.

If it burns down again you can tell where I am from the buring snowmobile smoke! :whine:

Under 900 miles? let me know where it is before ya light it, I could use the spare parts for mine that has 8300 miles on it...

Same here, if your gonna light it up, bring it up to ND and I'll take it off your hands.

if its burned down again its because u forgot to check something somewhere

daman I am not going to go through explaining the known issues with the Viper and slow speeds because if you don't understand by now I am wasting time explaining. Opticool gasket come to mind?

This isnt my first rodeo. I may be new to the Viper but I have had and built many Yamaha sleds. Even figured out how to get a mid 90s Vmax 600 to run right...lol. To insinuate I don't know how to maintain an engine without knowing me makes you a.....well I don't need to say it.

Last moths project was a complete rebuild of a 2007 Apex Mountain I bought for $1500.00. It is done now and riding it. Didn't expect to have to do Viper so soon.

Daman is by far the last person you should be calling "a..." whatever... show a little more respect for others around here.

Who don't know how to maintain that sled?

I answered an insult with what I thought a civilized response. I don't start any spats but I don't run from them when others start. And I am sure daman can stick up for hinself if he feels insulted

Back on topic, I am going to break this in before turning it over to the girlfriend. Sure hope the Opticool and needle change does it cause I know she is going to putt it around some.

Hold the phone here...was i insinuate anything directly toward you? no

allot of these posters i've seen come and go over the years have had bad previous owners that don't care or know "how to" thats why they come here crying for help after the fact, that's what i was was getting at.

and with a sled that only has 900 miles hell yea someone is at fault i know all about the viper reliability been around ya know and they last more then 900 miles i can tell ya.

sorry if i stepped on your feelings but that's how i feel..

Back on topic now......

Stingray, I feel your frustration. It sounds like you have it fixed. If not, I will understand the smoke and will remove my helmet for a moment of silence for it.

Good luck and definately keep us posted, good or otherwise.

I have been searching posts regarding blown vipers and it is crazy how many vipers have gone down over the past 5yrs. It does seem like a lot of them are out west, so I don't know if it's elevation related or the fact the midrange power band is used a lot given the up and down riding.

It seems like it's always a middle crank bearing, a piston meltdown, or both.

ajviper, yeah it is probably because we change elevation 2 or 3 thousand feet a day in a ride. That and coming down a steep winding narrow trail might be 4 or 5 minutes off the gas and on the brakes. And this issue seems to happen when running very slow, then pinning throttle.

Side note, Opticool gasket came yesterday and has water flow radically changed. Looks kinda like what we used to do to Checvrolet V-8s when we ran them in Super Modifieds. By that I mean changing water flow to balance out. I feel confident after raising needles and this gasket that it will be ok. I maxed out the oil pump also just in case. Pump was almost maxed out anyways though.

thats allot of oil...

Oil will displace gas be carefull on running lean possibly, 50:1 is all you need...

I assumed so by "who dont know how to maintain a sled?" if I assumed wrong then I will apoligize and ask you be more clear with who an insult is aimed at.

Back a few years the local sled rental place had 20 in a week burn down (slow tourist tours with no speed) in a week. Thats info I wish I had before I got this sled. And they were maintained by the local Yamaha shop. Just because it has not happened to you does not mean it doesnt exist.

And once again according to that same shop if you rode it like you stole it you probably will never see this happen. Sled ran perfect for me, problem occured after girfriend rode it slow. Boring stuff below, skip if you like

Fluid dynamics,
Viper seems plauged by the same issue race cars are. Water from engine meets at thermostat on intake manifold, water from left side point directly at water coming from right side. Side that is hotter and has more pressure pushes through.

So...first left side is hotter and pushes until right side gets hotter and takes over and the process goes on. Now usually this is fine. But in a high performance engine with lots of ignition advance (sound familiar to Viper engine) this can be a problem. As left bank gets hot and flows out the thermostat housing the right bank is heating up. Lets say engine is getting very hot and right side has to get even hotter to push water out. On a Chevrolet engine the head does not flow straight through (sound familair to Viper?) so this creates hot spots. On these hot spots the advanced timing combines with a spot that is hot and detonation occurs. If the same scenario occurs with really good gas and not as advanced timing the tops of the piston can get hot enough to melt at around the rings or even pull parts of the piston off.

Fix for our super mod engines drill front of Chevrolet heads and run water from there to a y to the radiator. Opticool has holes in head gasket to make the flow even in all cylinders, kinda doing a poor mans fix to coolant flow issues.

This weekend will tell if that fix works

I have a collection of aforementioned pistons from my racing days....lol.
