My stock 2002 Viper is consuming oil at a very high rate. I would say a quart to 5 gallons of gas. Plugs are very black and power valves very carboned up.

I checked the adjustment on the cable as described in Daman1's post and my gap is only 14mm. The adjusting collar is already at it's maximum length.

Is there another adjustment at the end of the cable?

you should be at 19-20mm with your freeplay. your adjusting collar needs to get shorther to extend your length of cable. therefore getting it a little leaner. longer the cable freeplay the leaner and shorter the cable freeplay the more oil. and 14mm is on the rich side as you stated.

I am trying to get there, but I can't. This picture only shows that I am at 13mm. But as you can see, the lock nut is all the way to the end so I can't make the freeplay any longer than 13-14mm.

is that an aftermarket oil cable? my oil cable looks different, also on my throttle my locknut is usually on top of the mount.

maybe something you can try, adjust your throttle cable before you adjust your oil. 1-2mm freeplay for throttle.

I am not sure if it is aftermarket or not. I have only owned the sled for 1 year. It seems like the cable is too short. Throttle cable has 2mm freeplay.

Has it always used alot of oil, or did it just recently start? If it just recently started, my guess would be that the oil pump went bad.

could be bad but still the cable is out of ajustement ;)! need to find why

It has always used a lot of oil since I bought it. But I have owned it for just 11 months, so I have only ran through 3 tanks of gas.

Somethings not right there you should be able to get proper spec outa that cable, did you check TJ500's suggestion? that nut "looks" like it has another turn to it.

is the cable end on the pump arm side seated and oriented right in the hole? it's very hard to see may have to pull carbs.

actually from your photo, that cable doesn't look quite right... there's usually a locking nut and another which appears like a locking nut but is actually part of the cable sheathe end... your image shows one of those missing?... doesn't look like an OEM cable to me? anyone else see what I mean? tj

maybe its time re-do the gaps for both. im not sure if anyone else notices the gas throttle locknut. maybe your oil cable and throttle cable are reversed. your throttle locknut should be on top of mount, see if you can go down and see the oil pump, check if the locknut is below the oil pump mount. should look just like your throttle on your pic.

yeah thats what I ask too, but he's not sure if its aftermarket. it has to be an aftermarket, unless the previous owner put in another model oil cable. not a viper cable for sure maybe.

The lock nut I can turn a little, but the adjuster sleave is maxed. It tightened up on me at the point you see in the picture, even though it appears to have another mm or 2 to go. Only that one nut on the whole thing though. Very possible an aftermarket piece.

The cable itself was seated properly on the oil pump arm, however the lever on the pump is open 3/8 of an inch or so. It is not seated at it's stopping point. So it acts like the cable is a bit too short.

I will get a new cable and also may just buy another pump as well. When I tried getting the oil cable off, I broke the bracket that is attached to the oil pump.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Actually when I purchased the sled, the previous owner did have a riser on there. I removed it , so it is no longer on there.

But probably still the aftermarket cables.

Just an update for everyone on this post. Thank you everyone for all the great suggestions.

Both my oil cable and throttle cable turned out to be aftermarket. So I bought used OEM ones from eBay. I didn't trust the oil pump so I replaced my oil pump as well. Now all is good with my oil consumption. I am right back in line and within specs on the cable adjustments.

Thanks again.
