2001 SX500R with about 6200mi on it, new top end rebuild. I just bought this sled. The first time out it would run @ 80MPH according to the speedo. Second time out its revving 8500 and will only hit about 70mph. Intermittently it will "up shift" and allow it to hit 80MPH without over revving, but for the most part it is stuck at the lower speed and revving like crazy. I checked the belt and it is in tolerance. Any ideas where else to look? Primary or secondary? Thanks,

Check all bushed clutch parts for wear.. The yamaha twins eat em up fast.

I have seen the 500's actually wear a groove in the clutch weight and it would stick on the groove and never up-shift. Eventually the weight broke loose and went off like a hand-grenade and took out the primary. You really want to look at this stuff.

An often overlooked dark art for some. They do need to be looked at. I wore a set of weights out in mine and as soon as I replaced them it was perfect again. You can see in this picture the grooves worn into the side of the weight.

Thanks

Many thanks to all for your advice. Turns out its a combination of just about everything mentioned. I guess 6200 miles is pretty good for one of these. Again thanks
