better clutching

I'm posting this here so it actually gets looked at. Looking for a decent setup for 97 vmax xtc 600 twin. It's all stock now with 8cr-00, Not sure on rivets, WSW primary spring- has the short cover. Red sec. I hace extra long cover, should I use that with a long spring? Have a bender orange & blu pink blu short. have 49/45 helix, 8ca-01 weights. I don't need a rocket, but this thing feel sluggish . Any ideas. Looked in tech section, but only one setup in there.
 
Ok this is actually under the wrong forum but I can get you where you need to be. I used to have a VERY dialed in '97 600 SX.

One of the reasons your sled probably feels sluggish is that motor came with a thick head gasket so you could run skunk pee for gas. The stock head gasket is 1.4 mm thick. I don't know if they are available anymore but there were two thinner gaskets available for it, a .8mm and also a .6mm one.(Hauck Powersports use to have these) I ran the .6mm one but you have to run minimum 92 octane fuel or it will pop. Secondly the clutching on the XT and XTC's were more mildly clutched for trail cruising. Stock the XTC has 8CR weights with 15.6mm rollers, a W-S-W primary spring, a red secondary spring with a 47 degree helix.

If you want stronger clutching it is best to run the weights etc. from the 600SX which have a more aggressive shift pattern. You will need the 8ab weights and 15mm rollers. I would find a spring from Bender or Hauck that has a 107-110KG shift out and a 50 KG preload. I got mine from Reichard Performance but they no longer exist. You will need a helix with a 47/43 cut and a green secondary spring. You could also gear down the top tooth from a 23/39 to a 22/39. Run the secondary at 60-70 deg. twist and use a 89L belt. Finally you will need good traction. PS: VFORCE reeds also work well in this engine.

NOTE: I have given this setup to several other 600 SX or XTC owners and they have given me great praise. I used to know some of the Yamaha tech people and Chris Vincent ran this setup in his snocross machine back in the day.
 
Also.........believe it or not I did some testing with silencers on this sled. You don't see this too often with silencers but there was one (the Yamaha GYT) silencer offered in their accessory catalog and at the time was the same as Bender's that actually made this sled quicker in acceleration tests. It would pick up a good two sled lengths in about 8-900 feet. It also gave the sled alot better throttle response. It kind of sounded like a dirt bike. I don't know if you could find another one though.

my dad has the bender silencer on his and he lost 5-10mph on top end!! i don't know if they changed the silencer design or something, but maybe my dad's silencer isn't like the one you tested??

i would assume the yamaha gyt can, that was available in the accessories catalog, was made by power inc??

That's a good question Mopar. The one I had did a quick S shape and straight down out the bellypan hole, was nickle plated and was real thin in shape. Like I said it sounded like a 2 stroke dirt bike. I got mine right through my Yamaha dealer. The fella I knew at the time from Yamaha (Jim Kedinger) had mentioned to me that it worked well on this engine so I bought one. The others I tried did lose power. One of them was one of the PPE superlights that were popular out west. The other was a DG.

this one is nickel plated too, and has a higher pitchy sound to it, like a dirt bike i guess. what's you email? i'll send you a pic of it.

Let me know if you think you want that Hauck "I" 47/41 helix. Also, I think that extra clutch I have has the 8CR weights in it.
 
Yes I remember Maxx Perf. had a similar spring. Mine was like a orange/yell I believe from Reichard's Performance back when Jeff Simons worked there.
