I know the '97 sleds had what people say ring issues. But what was the real problem. If I were to get a '97 , does it just need rings, or was the problem with the locating pin on the piston, so I need new pistons & rings?

are you looking at a 600 twin? thats the sled affected, and if you called a dealer with the vin they could tell you if the update was done

Only the 600 twins.? Was the problem the locating pin in the piston coming out? If I had a '97 tripple, I don't need to worry then?

yes, and yes. I had one, thats what happened. they had a recall that I was not informed of until later. I had a TERRIBLE dealer at that time. so mine was not fixed until it broke. there were updated rings and pistons for them. I think there was some issue with the cranks on the 97 700, but I am not positive. I think the 700 is a better choice for fuel economy and power, but I really liked my 600, it was light and the ohlins were AWESOME

The issues on the 97 700 was the one outer crank bearing. It was updated to a different style in 98. You'll see what I'm talking about if you look at the 2 different parts breakdowns. While some say it's a problem, others...like me...have had great luck with the 97 bearings. I had 7400 miles on my 97 before I took it apart, only replaced the outer crank bearings because I could. Still going to this day with the 97 style bearing. I WOULD NOT be afraid at all to buy a 97 700.
97 700 sx
i have a 97 700 and 2 99 700 the 97 i just put new rings in at 12,000miles 500miles ago. with no problems other then the drive axle shaft bearings on all 3 sleds at around 6,000miles have went bad.when the speedometer quits working that is a good sign that bearing is out
