Hi everyone,
I need a new sled to retire the 1991 Phazer....If I don't retire the Phazer, my G/F is not going to ride with me any longer, as her body can't take the lack of suspension. So I was thinking about an older (01-03) Vmax 700er?
What are the pro's and con's of that sled? How is the ride quality? Will it be leaps and bounds more comfortable than the Phazer? What are the trouble areas on that sled? Is it worth considereing a higher mileage sled of this vintage? How many miles would be too many, and I should shy away from? If a sled has 6,000 or 7,000 miles, is that the end of teh road for that sled? The ride quality and suspension is most important to her!
We don't ride that much, so I can't justify spending a lot on a sled. I have a 2000 SRX 700, and it just hiit 2,000 miles, and the 1991 Phazer only has 3,000 miles.....

Thanks,
Zack

Those Redheads will last along time. Check it over good before you buy. If the maintenance was done regularly, I would have no problem buying a 6000 or 7000 mile Vmax. You might be looking at rings, but not for sure, check the compression before you buy. The Redhead Yamaha motor is about as bulletproof as a 2-stroke can be.

I was looking at one, and the head is black? What does that mean?

Does she ride with u or on her own sled?

She rides the Phazer and I ride my SRX. The Phazer is in great shape, it is just old technology.

my dad has a 96 phazer that i used to drive before i bought my 99 vmax 700 - it is night and day differnce in handling, riding etc and so much smoother... i still get on the old phazer and it feels like a lumber wagon

How does the 2002 Vmax suspension compare to my 2000 SRX?

Zack

The Vmax will be similar to a SXR. It should ride much better than a SRX. Most the guys I know still riding SRXs have the rear skids long traveled. I have a buddy that just picked up a MINT 2000 SRX 700 with 1000 actual miles. The first thing he did was tear the rear skid out and have this done.

As for a VMax, don't rule out the SXR either unless reverse is a must. The little redhead 600 triple is a great motor for a woman too.

Really, I would look for a newer skid. Either plan on swapping a new skid into the Vmax, or just get a newer sled. If you really are looking for a better ride, the Vmax will be better but not a huge difference like a Mono or other newer technology skid will be. I would take the opportunity to get the best possible ride you can get that fits your budget. She (and therefore you) will enjoy riding that much more.

The 700 redhead engine is one of the best ever made by Yamaha from a longevity and reliability perspective. That head looks painted, which may mean it was modified. Could be overheated, but the color looks too uniform. hard to tell from the pic.
