I'm a rookie here & am looking for a stock SRX 700 & wanted some opinions as to which year is the best? I know 98 was it's first yr and 02 it's last, so what's the good & bad between those yrs? I'm an older buck now so I won't be pounding through mogals ect like I once did. I have found many mods & aftermarket parts while doing many searches so I know that there will be a never ending supply for this sled. I am also very capable of doing the work, if any, to get this to top form/condition. I live in NH so there is plenty of trail & lake riding where I'm located & would ride. So far I've found more than a few 01's, 98's, & 99's in my searches. Thanks for the read & any help that you people might have. Thanks for the read.....Don

01 or 02 were the best, depends on your taste, some folks didnt care for the DCS, others cant live without it

Id get 01 or 02 and jet it to 01 specs. The dcs is a nice feature to have, but it seems theres always someone having issues with it. Cant go wrong really with any of them. The 98&99 are the same with 98's having crank problems. In 2000 they changed a few things like ignition, little different head work, way better headlight, and I cant remember if they moved the transfer rods in '00 or '01. If I were to buy another id stay 2000 and up probably get another 2001. We all know they are the fastest ones anyways :ban:

I have two 2000 SRX's and love them. I am looking for a third SRX and it will be a 2001. I have rejetted both 2000 SRXs to the 2001 jetting which is safer (slightly richer). I believe the 2001 and 02 SRXs have independent thumb warmer and grip warmer controls, the detonation control system and a different color scheme with silver colored trailing arms and tunnel. I think you will be fine with any SRX from 2000 to 2002.

I am good with any year srx, set it up how you want it. Mine is from the last millenium & will put it against any '01- ( the fastest year).

jim, only the 2002 has dcs.

Thanks for all the great info. I was leaning more towards the 01's but I'd be happy with any yr as long as I find one that's not to abused. Was there a factory recall on 98's for the crank? If so, can Yamaha verify with the VIN#, if it was welded/updated?

yes there was. and sometimes they can. the record keeping on it wasn't perfect but in most cases it can be tracked.

personally i'd take any year. whichever you find in the best condition for the right price

Thanks for the info as that's good to know. Either way, if I get a high mileage 98' I will tear down the engine to do the top end & take a look at the crank. Is there an updated part# stamped on the crank or a way to visually see that it's been updated or is it just a weld or reinforced weld that's obvious to see?

you just need to look at it. The crank pins that that hold the lowere roc will be welded on the outside of the counterweights. Very easy to identify, once the crank is out.

With questionable fuel so many are running into today, I'd go with an '02 with DCS if I was buying today.

Being a older buck myself, I think you'll want to upgrade the front and rear suspension as well. Something to keep in mind and this may help in the purchase negotiation 'cause if the skid hasn't been out multiple times for service (which includes most unknowing SRX owners) you could use the skid's condition to knock down the price.

Point out the cracked W arm and all the loose bushings (wiggle the front skid shock, front spindles, radius rod ends) and he'll be thanking you for taking it off his hands. ;>)

Good luck and come on back when you're holding.

Thanks for the very useful info guys.....this place rocks & I'm so glad I joined. ;)!

Well....I may have found a very clean 98' with all the factory updates (crank) with a little over 3K mi. Have to get a look at it but so far the owner has provided all the correct & accurate info & pics asked.
