Chain tension

Just wondering what the correct chain tension should be. I have a 2001 mm 700 and just changed the chaincase oil and tightened my chain, but can you make it too tight?? I adjusted it so it still has play on the opposite side of the tensioner.. but how much is correct??
 
I like to see about a 1/2 to 3/4 inch slack on the opposite side of the adjuster, meaning you can move the chain to the left and right about 1/2-3/4". If you tighten them too tight, they will act like the brake is on when you let off the gas and eat up the chain and sprockets over time.
 
main drive bearing?

i have heard and seen the main drive bearing fail on alot of sx and srx sleds even seen one catch fire. there seemed to be no warning of failure. when should it be checked or changed. what are some preventative measures...

1/2 to 3/4 in each direction for a total of 1' to 1.5 total play OR 1/2 to 3/4 total of both directions? Depending how one interperts your instructions, they coald be off by 2x
 
I just run it up with my fingers nice and slow until I feel the adjuster start to tighten then tighten up the jam nut. This is the way I've done all my yamaha's over the years and never had a problem.
 
dont read more into then whats written there Roy! you want 1/2"-3/4" slack back and forth,TOTAL. You will know when the driveshaft bearings go bad, the very first thing that will happen is the speedometer will quit working, the small drive key in the end of the driveshaft is the first thing to break when the bearing gets sloppy, if you keep on riding it, the sled will start to make a knocking sound, then the chain and gears will start to skip and grind, well you get the idea........
 
I was told by the yamaha dealer to put the adjuster bolt finger tight then back it off 1/2 a turn then tighten up the jam nut, you dont' want it tight, just not too slack, if it's too tight it's harder on bearings and can slow you down, same as haveing a tight track....
 
there are different opinions on finger tight also, some say as tight as you can get it with your fingers, others say it's when you feel excessive strain , either way you will not have an problems around finger tight or a little looser..
 
Is finger tight ok for a Viper as well ? I actually used a rag along with my fingers to give me some better grip (greasy hands) and then tightened the jam nut. I hope thats ok. ;)!
 
I've always finger tightened as well with nothing to help you get more force on the adjuster(including a rag) and make sure when you tighten jam nut the adjuster doesn't turn.
