Signs of MM700 Oil Pump Failure?

Okay, did a few searches on here and I'm pretty sure I've got it figured out, but it doesn't hurt to ask, right?

01 MM700, after warmup the oil "idiot" light blips on and off randomly. Upon throttle up, it often hangs "on" especially on hard throttle. Have been noticing sled getting more "smokey" and watching oil consumption go up like a pre-hybernating bear. Sled has about 5,000 miles, of which 3,000 put on by me. Have done lots of engine work, but no oil pump replacement.

From everything I could find on here, sounds like pretty straight forward oil pump failure..... right?

pump failure and the oil light have no connection with each other. the sensor is only reading tank level.

before changing pumps, check to make sure the cable is seated properly in the adjuster on the cable and the cable is properly adjusted. 5000 miles seems a bit premature for pump failure on that model year, early pump failures were more common on the 97-99 sleds. perhaps in some of your motor work an earlier pump ended up on your sled?
 
No... I did / or helped with all the motor work. All top end stuff. So the oil light is just a sensor/wiring thing (because it does this with a full tank of oil)??

Hmmm...... it is chugging oil. I checked the gap, but just with the old eyeball... I'll measure it and try again.

Is there any other way to check if the pump is working properly?
 
i dont think that one has the timing marks on the pump and arm, although it might. as you have probably found in your research the pumps have the fail safe mode where they go into an over-oil as an indication of pump failure. way better than the opposite.

could be a bad wire or the sensor going bad as far as the idiot light.

confirm cable adjustment on both throttle and oil, compare oil usage vs fuel and derive at a ratio, then decide from there.

Have you added a riser? I added a riser last year and started using alot of oil, I found out that the cable was being pulled wide open when I turned. I added longer cables this year and I'm back to using a normal amount of oil.
 
Check to make sure the cable is adjusted properly. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but there is supposed to be a measurable gap in the oil cable where it separates, I believe something like 21-22 mm. It could just be out of tolerance. As for the light coming on, staying on, going off, etc. the float sensor could just be stuck. Mine has been doing that since about 3000 miles ago and I haven't noticed any additional consumption. Was told by a Yamaha mechanic that it is not a problem, unless the consumption goes up/down. I still use about 1 qt per tank, which is about 40:1 mix ratio.

I ended up putting mine around 23.5mm for a ratio of approximently 47:1. Running very thin Mystic Full Syn though. The 23.5mm was measured with a digital caliper.
