Hi. I have a 2001 Mtn Max 700 with a bunned CDI. I need to replace the CDI unit and want to ensure that I purchase the correct unit. So I go to the parts manual and find that there are two different CDI units listed with part numbers 8DG-85540-00-00 and 8DM-85540-00-00. Does anyone know what the diference is between these two part numbers? ... besides that one has a G and the other has a M in the part number ... I got that! I know that Yamaha changed from a single bulb to a two bulb headlight and am wondering if it may be to do with that change. My sled has the two bulb headlight. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Thanks for the reply ... but, is there any difference between a CDI unit whether its for the 600 or 700 Mtn Max?

The issue is that I can source a Sport Parts Inc (aftermarket) CDI unit to replace part number 8DG-85540-00-00 and it is indicated to fit both 2000 and 2001 Mtn Max 600 and the 2001 Mtn Max 700.The only differences that I am aware of between a 600 and 700 are the size of the bore/cylinders and carberators (and maybe some clutching?). There are no differences for the electrical that I am aware of. Can you provide any further clarification? Again, any help would be appreciated.
 
Just an FYI. I tried one of those SPI cdi's on my 97 700 redhead. Everything worked, but the water temp light stayed on all the time. I ended up using my stock yamaha one and sent the aftermarket to a guy that was building a race sled and wasn't going to run any factory gauges so he didn't have to worry about the light staring at him.
 
the 8DG is the 175 watt generator (single head lite bulb). 8DM is the 300 watt generator (Dual bulb). for '01 yamaha lists both ignitions on the 700 sxr.

Thanks everyone for the info ... now I am more confused, but at least I understand the difference. I am confused whether I should plan to use the aftermarket CDI unit or not.

Also, I guess that I should have stated the only electrical difference that I am aware of is the change from a one bulb headlight to a two bulb headlight, rather than that I was not aware of any electrical differences.
