I rode about 295 miles this past weekend in the U.P. on my '01 SRX with 4 guys on Apex's and noticed that my fuel mileage is terrible. I got 8.5 miles/gallon which is terrible. These guys ride hard and I was trying to keep up (my first U.P. trip with the SRX) and was riding at 75-95mph on all the seasonal roads and railroad grades and was pretty heavy on the throttle in the trees as well. Is this normal for some heavy throttle riding? Can you guys give me any suggestions where to start to look for problems?
Here is my setup. Anything not listed is stock.
147.5/147.5/150 main jets
42.5 pilot jets
stock needle position
air/fuel screws at 1-7/8 turns out
New OEM reeds
Bender silencer
Hauck "G" (49/41) helix wrapped to 60
500 miles on new belt
Carb heater was on
Temps were 25-35 degrees
I had the carbs off just before this trip and they were clean.
I am kind of at a loss with this. I would have guessed that I would get at least 10mpg the way I was riding bases on the 11-12mpg that I read of people getting. The 8.5mpg isn't really any better than the '95 Vmax 600 I had earlier this season.

okay idk know any sled that will get over 10mpg when riding to the bar 90 percent of the time. do some normal trail riding around 50 to 60 and stay off the throttle and report back. if its still bad then u got a problem

I hear ya. I am just new to SRX's and wondered if this was normal. I probably won't be doing anymore riding this year so I won't be able to check it until next season. I was just wondering if there were an ideas of things I should check.
power valve issue? You should have no problem keeping up with the 1 tons

I replaced one pulled out powervalve about 200 miles earlier and cleaned them all. I don't think that would be the problem unless something happened with one of them right away the first day out riding. It ran the same the whole trip.
...and those Apex's are heavy but are pretty powerful. My brother-in-law was pulling away from me pretty easily from 70-95mph on his '09 Apex.

Try turning the carb heater off. I never use mine. We drive at -30c and sometimes lower .

Similar post came up awhile back.I've NEVER seen over 10mpg and seen less plenty on my 2000 SRX.If you're hummin' down the open road at 90,depending on trail conditions,8-10mpg is pretty normal.I notice a drop in mpg with a couple inches of fresh snow on a packed trail.I see no difference in mileage as I jet up and down for temps. Two stroke man, chugs petrol when it's working.
My last trip I was getting 9.5 MPG and that was taking it easy on the throttle.

The Bender silencer shouldn't affect fuel mileage, should it?

I've been offline lately...dropped my laptop and Toasted my screen!!! New screen coming thanks to Ebay.
Some comparison info:
I did a ride last friday from Dryden to Ear Falls in NWO. The ride was comprised of groomed trails for approx 25 miles,10 miles of unridden bush logging roads in 3' - 4' of snow,10 miles of fresh unridden Hydro lines in 3' - 4' of snow then over 40 miles of ungroomed, but smooth packed old rail bed. A 2010 Nitro XTX and myself rod side by side breaking trail in the fresh snow to leave a trail for the short track sleds. On the rail bed we cruised at 70 - 90 mph for the most part[my GPS only showed 103mph for max speed for the day].
Here's the fuel/mileage info when we got to Ear Falls:
-87 miles on GPS
My 2002 144" SRX:
30 litres/6.6 imp gallon/7.9 us gallons = 13 mpg Imp/11 mpg US
2010 Nytro XTX:
26 litres/5.7 imp gallon/6.8 us gallon = 15.2 mpg Imp/12.79 mpg US
2010 Venture GT[never broke trail]:
24 litres/5.2 imp gallon/6.3 us gallon = 16.7 mpg imp/13.8 mpg US
2006 Polaris 900 Fusion[rarely broke trail]:
36 litres/7.9 imp gallon/9.5 us gallon = 11.0 mpg imp/9.2 mpg US
1999 Polaris XLT Touring[never broke trail]:
39 litres/8.5 imp gallon/10.3 us gallon = 10.2 mpg Imp/8.5 mpg
Just the facts:

i think you should try to give a bit more wrap on your secondary went u do trail raidding

All of the SRX's I have ridden with in the past got better gas mileage than you are getting when riding fast. You can increase mileage by rolling into and out of the throttle, and backing off the throttle to the point that still keeps the same speed. I suspect that you have an issue on your sled though.

My 2001 SRX gets approx the same fuel mileage as by 2 buddies RX1 and 2008 Apex. always within 2-5 litres when we fuel up and i run premium. we ride them hard sometimes as well. i also get over 400KM per litre of oil. i think there is something wrong with yours. my old 98SRX got approx the same fuel mileage compared to these same 2 machines.

Spin track by hand with the secondary,, make sure drive line spin freely,,, check skid wheels and make sure track is not to tight..... Should at least get 10-11 miles per gal........

Should have posted before - most I have rode with got 11 and better on the trails riding very hard. Skidooboy used to get very good mileage on his when he used to ride trails. Anybody who rode with him knows he covered the ground as well as any.

The skid wheels should be all good because I had just put a Viper skid in it and check them all plus all of the 5.125" wheels got replaced with 5.3" Polaris wheels with new bearings. Looks like I will have some things to check out before I put it away in storage for the summer.
Keep the ideas coming. Maybe I can track down what the problem is.

Did you clean and inspect both clutches? Are they hot to touch after riding hard? What do the plugs look like? Can you freely turn track by hand? Adjust Oil cable freeplay (20 - 22 mm)? Cut spark plug wires back 1/4 inch? Adjust PV's properly? Air foam clean? What are your WOT RPM's?

Did you clean and inspect both clutches?
Inspected but not cleaned
Are they hot to touch after riding hard?
Warm but not hot to the touch. Secondary was warmer than primary.
What do the plugs look like?
Haven't pulled the plugs yet. I put new ones in for this trip and the old ones looked good.
Can you freely turn track by hand?
Yes
Adjust Oil cable freeplay (20 - 22 mm)?
Didn't check it before the trip
Cut spark plug wires back 1/4 inch?
No
Adjust PV's properly?
Yes
Air foam clean?
Yes
What are your WOT RPM's?
8400rpms. I was previously running the helix at an 80 wrap but backed it off to see if the belt would get higher in the primary. The WOT RPM's were 8500 at an 80 wrap.

Another thing to keep in mind is the carb air screws. I have run into this before on my Viper where the air screws can get frosted up from snow dust and messes up your fuel mixture and the gas mileage suffers greatly.

How much mileage does it have? It could be wear in carb components. I never got more than 11 mpg with mine and lately it was 9 and as low as 6. I swapped out my carbs with a spare unused set and the sled was much more responsive and mileage was 14, 15, and 16 the last time I went out.
