Hand warmers not working

Still not convinced they are working right

How warm are the hand warmes suppose to get? I know on our 98 Vmax 600 they will got hot if I leave them turned up. On the Viper I can ride for an hour and they will get warm but not really to the point where I need to turn them down. What are the grips like for you other viper owners?

This weekend when the temp was around 0* I had the warmers all the way up on my viper up and my hands got rerally hot sometimes I had to turn them down, I also have the hand guards that seem to help. I also hoked up my heated shield threw the handwarmers and it all seemed to work fine.
 
Had a problem with my 03 Viper as well. Handwarmers never seemed to get really warm (they occaisonally worked last year on warmer days.. not the cold days). Then one night my warning lights came on (of course it was - 30 C) and I discovered that the control knob was bad. Changed the control knob and now they work but still not near as hot as my old 98 xtc. Those things would burn through your gloves. These get warm but that is about it. Low windshield and cool temp's made me switch to a good gortex glove. Stopping the wind sure helps a lot. Still wished the warmers were as good as the old sled. Still waiting for decent conditions to really test them this year. This could be the weekend!! :WayCool: :rockon:
 
Mine get luke warm and that its, the thumb will burn me it get so hot. What is the cdi? I'm going to pull the bars apart this week and do some prodding with the meter to see if I can find any problems. Anyone know what voltage the hand warmers should be seeing for a 02 viper? Thanks
 
I have a 2000SXR and a 2003VMAX and both burn your hand when full up.
Even with the cold weather we get in Northern Ontario they are still very hot.
 
OK Guys I can't tell you how hot in Degrees F your hand warmers should get...But I can tell you that on the 02 & 03 vipers the little knobs that you turn are NOT connected to the hand warmers. If you look in the owners manual you will see that the control knobs are connected to the CDI and it modulates the amount of power going to the hand & thumb warmers. Sort of a complicated way of doing it compared to the old high / low switch. So be carefull with the tinkering because its not that hard to blow up the CDI...
 
I forgot to mention I did notice the left handwarmer is loose and with little effort, I can turn the grip... Could that be part of the problem?
 
mdkuni- From searching it looks as though if your grips are loose the wires inside can short and you'll only get half the heating effect that you should get.

My question to all is; is this the only way to get partial heat? I'm thinking the wiring is fine since they come on and its either the CDI ($450) or the grips ($30 ea). Thoughts???
 
Mr Sled, do you have any numbers on what things should read at?

I read somewhere that if I discconnect the hadnwarmers from the cdi and measure the resistance I should see 2.5 ohms, otherwise my grips are faulty. Any specs from hotgrips or yamaha on what voltage, resistance, etc you should see when testing? I couldn't find nothing that detailed. Thanks!
 
I have all the numbers you need. I have been watching this post from the start waiting for someone to stumble onto something. My warmers don;t work any more either. I am going to buy new ones tonight. All my numbers check out and all my voltage is in check. But my warmers don't work any more. They started not working when I added the aluminium bar ends. Then I pried them off the old bars for my new bars and now they just don't work. The sad thing is that the thumb warmer is seperat and it only works some of the time also. This is making me think I don't have bad grips but something else bad. The grips are tied into the current limit relay and I never had the update done. Remember the SXR's not starting correctly with the relay switching the power over. I think I might also get the relay replaced like I should have and see if that fixes it. I discovered that if I keep my RPM over 5000 my thumb gets hot. Leading me to believe that it's RPM related. So, I put my sled on the stand and sure enough, at idle you get like 2 volts ot the warmers at 4800 RPM you get full voltage. Well on the trail your blipping the gass all the time. So your over and under 4800 all the time and the grips don't get a chance to warm up. I will see if I can get it all fixed and let you know what I find. I will post the book values so you can test your own stuff later today when I get a break from work. doug
 
I was thinking it was that damn relay...but I have also heard, the handle bar ends will suck the heat out of the grips like a heat sync.....keep us posted Doug, it sounds like you are on the right track.
 
Bingo! There working

I had posted earlier in this thread that the handwarmers were not working on my 02' 700MM. After watching this post for a while,I took another look at my sled, the connections were secure, but my brake side grip was loose on the bar with the rivet still attached. Went and picked up a new grip from the dealer and replaced the loose one. They are now working again, had to turn them down. By the way, the grip I took off, did not LOOK bad with no evidence of wear other than being loose on the bar. Hope this might help someone else. Soc

sockey, my sled is the same way on the side of my brake lever the grip is loose. I will have to take it back to the dealer and have them take care of it since they charged me for taking it to them the first time... and then they told me it was fine just because they were getting some heat out of it!?!?! I can ride it for 2 hours straight with the temp all the way up and it gets warm if i am lucky.
 
When I first started having problems, they were only working part of the time. And they finally just died. After removing the grip just by drilling the rivet out and pulling it off, I saw no signs of adhesive. Does Yamaha not glue the grips down in the factory. They are a snug fit new, but after heating up on a few long runs, gripping and twisting, the rubber loosens up. I see how these can fail if they are not glued down. I know I grip the brake side pretty hard going through the bumps. Let us know what happens. Soc
 
UPDATE: I installed the new relay on my 01' SXR-700 and I purchased new grips. I tested the old grips and they ohm out fine. I also installed one new grip and one old. The new ones hot warmer than the old but nothing like when my sled was new. They don't get hot. So, with the grips and relay out of the picture and my warmers still not working we have a few more things that could be wrong. The temp control knobs are connected to the CPU not the warmers themselfs. They do not connect to ground they go between 3 pins on the cpu (one is common between the 2 v-resistors) these could be deffective but I doubt it. Second thing could be a bad ground on the hand warmer. The Y/r wire comes off the cpu and the oter end goes to ground. If the ground is bad we might get the correct voltage but the current draw will be down and cause the loss of heat. The CPU might also have a bad common ground. I am going to go over my entire wire harness tonight if I get a chance. It's got to be there someplace. Or, it's a bad cpu and I will fight Yamaha for a new one because I have delt with these warmers not working fo 2+ years. I'll let you know what I find again. Also the service book says that the condenser could be the problem. I will test that also. Doug
