Hand warmers not working

When I bought my used 02' Viper the heated shield was wired into the hand warmers under the handle bar pad. I noticed that that the right grip was really hot no matter were the knob was set and the left grip was not working. I found one heated shield lead was pinched under a handle bar bolt head and there were cracks in the heated shield leads farther up stream. I pulled all of the heated shield wiring out and both grips worked fine.

I was chating with a mechanic at a Yamaha dealer in Hancock, MI last week about wiring heated shields. He told me that you do not want to wire the the heated shield to the hand warmers. He said that it will reduce the performance of both the hand/thumb warmers and the heated shield. He suggested that you wire the heated shield to the head light.

I have not used a heated shield but after this last UP trip I am going to wire one in. G.B.
 
If your installing a heated shield my suggestion is to wire it in under the seat with the tail light (you can also run the shield wire down your jacket to your crotch and you can have full motion when riding and the cable can't get caught in the throttle assy. and cause TORS to come on, seen that happen way too many times with bar mounted heat plugs). We have used that on all our SXR/SX/SRX/Viper installs and it has proven very reliable. You should NEVER install anything on any Yamaha that is controled by the CPU. The warmers are completely CPU controled and your shield would put undue current draw on that circuit and possibly dammage the CPU. You should also understand the wire diagrams for your sled that way when you install anything electrical your installing it on the regulated side and the sled will open the circuit if something goes wrong. UPDATE: tested my stater/pickup all test good. Tested both condensers tested good. Checked ground from CDI to frame good, tested ground from motor to frame good, tested warmer black wire to ground good. Tested both variable resisters good. So I started it up and read the voltage. I have less than 3 volts until I hit 4000RPM then it starts to climb. At about 5000 RPM I have 11.8 volts. The only thing I have not done yet is look at current draw but I did another test and I think I got good draw. I figured if I connected the warmers in parallel I would cut my resistance in 1/2, 3 ohms per grip in series is 6 ohms, in paralel it's 1.5 ohms. Well the grips got hotter and my head light almost dies so it's pulling some current. I just can't figure out why they won't work. Someone needs to swap out their CDI unit and or voltage regulator for an SXR with good working grips and see if that fixes it. Doug
 
UPDATE from my sled with the same problems:

Ohm on handwarmers is 3.7 ohms
Voltage at idle is 3V and ramps up to 10+

Ohm on thumb which works perfectly is 41 ohms??
Voltage at idle is 3V and ramps up to 12+ at or near 4K rpms

Grounds were good, I'm confused on teh ohm reading for the thumb, I might have not got a good connection but with resistance it should give me the right awnser or nothing.

BOTH reostats would turn either warmer up or down in voltage the same, sort of eliminating that possibilty (which I hoped was the culprit).

My hand warmers weren't working either. I hooked them up seperate from each other, one at a time. The brake side would heat up great. When I hooked up the throttle side I got nothing. I will be replacing that grip this weekend.
 
Update!

First things first. If you are ever in the Houghton Lake area or near by and need something go to Hacker's Yamaha. I have been very pleased with their work. I took the sled to them this weekend and they worked on it right away. They replaced the left grip and I went and rode the sled and for the first time I was able to turn my grips down! ;)! :yam:
