I have a 2002 700 tripple red head. It backfires and gets horrible gas mileage. i have been thinking these problems could be because there are no powervalves allowing unburnt fuel out and into the exhaust. this is just a theory i have. Am i complety stupid for thinking this or????
It sounds like you have either carb, reed or ign issues letting unburnt fuel into the exhaust.I would first check these things out.
These Red heads were designed without power valves and they are normally a very trouble free reliable engine so any engine issues would not be associated with any kind of power valve effects.

Power valves themselves are a potential point of failure. I don't know about on the sleds, but on the waverunners a lot of people have had them drop and ruin motors. I had one break in half on my waverunner motor, right at the stem. Bounced off the very edge of the piston and out the exhaust. Brand new motor had maybe 15 hours on it at the time, so I got pretty damn lucky there. Replaced all 3 after that. $150 a pop.
