Manitoba FLOOD WATCH 2011

must off been cool to see the Flood from above..a birds eye view so to speak .Seems hard to believe we will get a flood seeing all the field are getting black now and not to much water ..normal it seems. But I read that the water that flows north from Fargo and Grands Forks is like a slow moving tsunami and it will push forward Northward...

The suspense of waiting to see if their would be a flood would drive me nuts.... Kinda reminds me of the Heinz ketchup commercial...... Anticipation(chorus sound).....

Blue (think tour name is Doug) Looking at your flood wall, how's that going to work, I guess my theory would say that the weight and pressure of the water would want to prush it over or collapse it? Tracy

the concrete is poured in to the ground in front like a claw. The steel uprights go in and bolt a 2x6 on each one. Then we screw 3/4"treated plywood to each 2x6.You are then supposed to place plastic over the wall and out in front some 10 to 20 feet. Then place sandbags to keep plastic down. The wall acts like a retainer to hold the plastic. In side the concrete pad is a curb.We have 4"x 4" x10 foot long angle channel that bolts to inside of the uprights. Then we cut 4 x 4 posts to length from the angle channel to the curb to hold the wall from pushing in.I really won't have any pressure on mine,so not using the channels. The concrete that is poured as a pad around my house is already to the same level as the flood was in 1997.Once all installed..it will protect my main floor of house by 3 feet or so.Can't ever see water going that high ever anyways.NOW my basement was never dug out..it was poured from ground up to 9 foot height.Other people here who have been here for a long time have their main floors only like 1 to 2 feet above the surface soil. They have to put up their wall with 8 foot uprights and run plywood length wise(up). My plywood is run 4 feet high only(because I am high already. Those people with the 8 foot walls have to really brace their walls for water pressure I'll tell you. They haven't been tested yet since the 97 Flood.Engineers say it will work...yeah love to be their when the wall has like 7 feet of water against it...

Other people with big properties also have permanent mud dikes in place. These walls like I have are given to people who did not have the room to build a proper mud dike.I like it better because it is cleaner looking..instead of having a dike around your house and you can't see over the dike from the inside of the house thru the windows.I just remove mine and bussiness as usual.Others have to contend to cutting the grass on these huge dike..extra work for them and hard cutting on an angle to.

THANKS for the indepth explanation! I didn't realize that there was that much thought put Into your flood wall, plus with building higher up on an elevation should help tons as you state. I'll say you sound pretty prepared for now. Good Luck (and take pics plz).

back in 1999 when I had the work done, did a trial run of putting wall up.Government paid $60,000 and I had to pay $10,000 decuctable.I didn't think that we should have to pay anything towards it because the City artificially floods us when they raise the Gates.

some pics of the wall erected::

Like Blue said , its a coin.
If you touch your pointer finger to your thumb to make a circle then you have the size of a "toonie". I would guess its similar to a silver dollar?

Not to be confused with a 'round to-it.

Update: Spring melt is under way,River has been rising..ice jambs North of the city takes out a few homes and surrounds others. They may start to operate the Flood gates by tonight or this weekend once all ice is gone.THEN...the water level will change drastically where I am.The water level will be controlled to protect the city while we get washed out South. Now there is rain falling and more to come.Predictions are way higher then 2009 and close to the Flood of the century in 1997..time will tell.
Don't want to put up my Plywood on the flood wall when it is raining and wet since I have to seal it to the concrete as I install the sheets..need it to be dry..gonna be fun for sure...

here is a pic of the river with ice flows present..this just down the road from me....

Blue...is the highway to Pembina still open? Are they planning on closing it again?
I was planning on heading down to Pembina next Tues to pick up some parts.

Bob

Bob..are you talking about Hwy 75?? It is still open here. The flood gates will be raised soon and that will start backing up water, but will be a while before the Hwy gets covered..if it does. They will be shutting down the Hwy near Morris,Man.
If you are in the South end on 75..drop in and see me.I am 7.2 km's South of St.Norbert off the Hwy..
