My Subaru is Sick

Just what I need at this time of year! My Subaru 2.5 RS has a #2 rod bearing heading south! This will be engine # 3 in 120,000 miles! This is my highway commuting car...I have run synthetic oil with slick 50 every second oil change, car lives at 3000 rpm on the highway 99% of the time[sometimes late at night 4000 - 5000 for extended periods]...no excuse!
I am pulling my 2000 P71 Panther tow vehicle out to substitute for my commute until I decide what to do with it.

Both previous engines were new from Subaru, the original and second one was changed on warranty when car was fairly new because of piston knock issues...I am not sure whether I will rebuild this one, install overhauled one, or sell car as is.

The engine in there right now is the second engine, it has about 100,000 miles on it and it has a light no load knock at 2000 - 3000 rpm that I have traced to the #2 rod bearing...not uncommon in the 2.5 Subies. If I decide to change the engine it will be eng number 3.

...maybe thats why I like my Subaru so much....its just like a 2 stroke!

atleast your car didnt throw a rod through the oil pan doing 70mph down the interstate doing 2300rpm....

we put a new engine in her and havnt had any major problems yet...

Sharp car Bob! I like yours and the WRX. That sucks that the motor's going south, wonder if you can get away with a simple bearing roll? Unless it spun a bearing and or scored the crank. Is it good on oil?(doesn't use any)
 
Engine runs pefect, zero oil burn just has the light knock 2000 - 3000 rpm. I have obviously caught the problem early. Unfortunately to change a rod bearing on these, the engine has to be removed and cases split.
 
A friend of mine has the exact same car. But he only has like 40k on it. Bought it new when there were only a very limited quantity made that year or 2. then they came up with the wrx.

only 120k and it's gone through that many motors? ouch....

Do you pull a trailer with it?

No don't pull a trailer but it lives at RPM on the highway...may have something to do with it. Otherwise its been a great car...I will probably fix it as I don't want to part with it.

That's good as those little motors are really not that good for pulling.

One guy on one of the forums I am/ was on used a non turbo impreza 2.5 like yours for pulling about 1500 lbs of trailer a lot. I think that is well over and beyond what they are intended for.

My Audi lives around 2800-2900 rpm on the freeway all the time too (75-80 mph). I wish it had the new 8 speed instead of the 5 speed it has.

I'd fix it too, as those are fun cars and yours is clean. I hear those motors are pretty easy to work on, except when you get into the bottom end. Good news is that you have a ton of options for performance parts when you rebuild it.
