so im throwing some thoughts around and im wondering why you dont seem to see vipers making srx power that seem to be reliable????
is it possible to get a viper to outrun an srx and still be reliable?
seems to me pipes are not too reliable/consistent...
is there a remedy to this?
what os drifferent between the srx motor and the viper that makes the srx so good on gas with tripple pipes????
im thinking about buying a viper but i need it to run with and sometimes beat the srxs, and apex's i run with.... i need to do all this while being very reliable...
i wonder if its in the srx cylinders that makes it so reliable with pipes?
if so im thinking i may run the motor out of my srx in a viper with some suspension work and have a fast trail sled that could handle the bumps my srx gets killed on...

The cooling design of the head and the ignition timing map are 2 of the main issues that make jetting for pipes more difficult on the Viper. That said there are a number of piped Vipers out there that have been very reliable.

agreed.

SLP pipes seem to not sacrifice reliability at all from my experience and what I've read here on TY, as long as your get better cooling to the head and get plenty of gas and oil to the motor.

If I were to build a "trail" piped Viper here's what I would try.
-Ceramicoated Bender or SLP pipes
-SRX Carb rack or Viper carbs completely jetted exactly like 2001 SRX including slides. pilots, mains, needles, needle jets
-carb vents OUT of the airbox
-modified SRX heads or Viper head[with opticool gasket] modified to 2001 SRX squish and compression ratio
-SRX base gasket
-SRX rear cooler
-either a 2001 SRX CDI with a +2 degree keyway or Viper CDI with at least a -4 degree keyway[-6 would be better] to retard the timing. This retarded timing would be needed on the 2004+ DCS Vipers as the SRX CDI would not be applicable
-premium fuel
-8750 RPM
This is just my .02c as I have not done this but I think it would be trail reliable and close to SRX mileage and performance.
Just some ideas

save your self ALOT of work and just long travel your srx, both front and rear suspension. All you have to do is bolt on some parts and you have good reliable power that will get better gas mpg, no piped viper can come close to a srx for gas mpg, no matter how good you fine tune the viper jetting/clutching.

why not put an srx or redhead in a viper? will it fit or work?vipers great looks and ride with a badass srx engine. best of both worlds. or just long travel an srx like mr viper said.

X2 - works for me although hindsight being 20/20, I'd opt for an xtra-10 (or Xpert if you want to stay Yamaha) rather than the Viper skid I have now.
Reliable power plus sorta-big bump performance.

My 2000 srx has the pioneer long travel front and rear, Xtrawheel kit, benders Quick steer radious rods. Dont remember if it was part of long travel or the bender kit But stance ended up a lil wider in the front. Mods came in $900ish and I Love it!

The only thing that sucks about the SLP pipes are that you cant put them in an ER model. I went with benders because I got a heck of a deal on them from eBay. Im not sure how piped vipers are compared to the srx but i beat my neighbor that has a 05 Rev and he is also 60lbs lighter then me. He beat my other neighbor that also has a 05 Rev that has thousands of dollars into the engine. So i know his Rev is set up right. From what i have heard about Rev's, I'm very happy at how my viper is running.
well i guess bender pipes it is....cant give up reverse and e-start!

thnaks for all the input guys... i think i may stick with the srx for abit more ive been thinking about not puting more money into it becauase of the recent damage but it will be cheaper to fix and long travel it then to invest in a viper ..... and at this point i know what i have, ive replaced every bearing,bushing,wheel,etc...bummed about the hood and pod and handle bar damage but ill get it fixed... besides that my srx just started to run good... maybe i can afford some porting this summer if i dont buy any other toys lol

The SLP pipes will fit with e-start and reverse. All that is needed is to get a smaller battery (one that will fit sideways in front of the right footwell) and some minor trimming of the old battery mounting posts on the chaincase cover.

i got a set of bender pipes that i have been thinking about selling. pipes are pretty clean and comes with srx rear cooler if you want it. message me if you want them

i think as far as ease and money would be farther ahead keepin the srx. depends on if you like the looks of the viper better, and if you want an er that already has electric start and reverse on them. if you stay with the srx i have a nice set of long travel ohlins to fit it im going to get rid of. they are not just extensions they are 15" eye to eye. they worked really nice on the srx i had, matched well for the viper ohlins i had in the rear, combined with 1.25 ripsaw track and pilot skis that sled was untouchable. i should have kept it. i now have a viper er and am doing a setup this summer like sideshow bob mentioned but so far i am really missing the srx.

Where you at in northern mich? If you can make it snow we could find out! I got away from sleddin for a few years and when the bug bite me again it took me 3 months to find my new to me srx 700. I knew personally i had to have an srx, almost like yamaha built it just for me! I was very pleasantly surprised how almost effortlessy I was whoopin on my buddys doos and cats that they proclaimed to be "wicked fast" I will be the first to admit though somedays it would be nice to be able to throw it in reverse!

I live in Petoskey. Yea i wish i could have made it snow this winter. Didn't get much snow at all this year. Second year in a row for a bad winter up here. Southern Michigan got alot more snow then we did. It was just an overall bad year for me. Only got 350 miles on my viper this winter because I had to do a rebuild. Had to wait almost two months to get parts.

I am in the middle of installing a 01 srx motor into a viper chassis. srx wire harness is in, pipes are almost fitted, all i need is a can to finish fitting?? anyone have a aftermarket can for cheap? I may have to do some cutting and welding to make it go out stock viper hole so i do not need a new one to cut apart. will post pictures when complete

use the stock srx muffler, It will fit if you do some reworking on the pipes and install the srx muffler mount and it will make more power. Srx exaust on a viper is quieter than on a srx if you can imagine that because of the air box I think.
You do not need that wire harness, you could just use the viper one. Ether way, you will need to either run two temperature sensors of bypass one input with a resistor.
If your using the viper gauge, you will need to wire the three wires to the speedo pickup, power/ground/output to gauge. It would be easier to just use the viper harness and add the one wire to the cdi box for the temp. You can rob the wire from your old harness, easily goes in.
Glad to see the srx piped vipers are still being made, though you cheated with the srx cylinders. Be careful with the cooling, use a mega power rail or build one.
