viper timing question

i have a 2002 viper and want to make my bender pipes work but i went a better fuel milage and more reliable piped viper. so i want to back off my timing but i dont really know how many degrees, also i want to wrap my pipes for a more constant temp for them and more cooling to help the motor out more too. im shooting for a solid 12 mpg, so if u guys got any good opionins can u help me out please
 
Now you want to keep them pipes? I thought you wanted your sled stock? Also, you want 12mpg on a bender piped viper?? That ain't gonna happen.....sorry to say.

i love the sounds and power of the pipes. i dont like the 60 miles i was getting to a tank. im gonna try and make my sled more reliable and not have to worry so much about detonation or getting bad gas. i figure if i back of my timing and add alot more cooling that i would be able to lean out my mains and mid range some what and work on my clutching some more.
 
not sure about timing keys, probably talk to somebody like bender, i just use them for refrence since they are not far from me in ny. any speed shop could tell you, i have heard of and im gonna try this summer using the srx cdi for less advanced timing, as for cooling you can justs use an opticool head gasket, and have heard of people modifying srx heads or getting aftermarkets, allows you to equall compression of all the cylinders with the tripple pipes. instead of staggered compression like stock vipers use. most people with this setup uses srx pipes also but im using benders cause i dont wanna cut up my hood to make em fit, and they run close to the stock rpm range like the stock srx pipes. havnt found all the pros and cons for ya yet though, i just had back surgery so im not doing much right now, after i am gettin around in the garage bein bored again im gonna start this project this summer. good luck

well i am doing the same thing and thought about doing the srx cdi too but idk how much it will back off the timing at 8700 rpms.
 
As far as my memory serves...the small Arctic Cat key[ZRT 600 tripple] is the same as the tripple Yamahas so if you can get an offset keyway from Fett bros, Bikeman, or someone else for the ZRT 600 it should fit...but I CAUTION that I am not 100% sure anymore!

Timing advance info:

Viper:
8000 = 18
8250 = 18
8500 = 18
8750 = 15
9000 = 13
9250 = 11

SRX:
8000 = 13.5
8250 = 10
8500 = 9
8750 = 8
9000 = 4
9250 = 0

thanks slideshow bob helps alot. so seeing that will make the timing drop alot will i be able to be able to jet down too? save some more gasoline.
 
Words of Caution:

By changing the timing with an SRX CDI and jetting down you are heading off into the unchartered area of "No Man's Land".
There is a lot more going on that makes a Piped Viper a lot different then an SRX.

But.... if I were to head where you want to go, here's what I would cautiosly try.[this is only a suggestion as I have NOT tried this!]

-Bender pipes
-2001 SRX CDI
-complete 2001 SRX carb rack[so all jetting is as an SRX...pilots,needles,needle jets and slides included!] you could completely rejet your Viper's carbs but it may be cheeper just to pickup an SRX rack
-Jet the mains as if it was a ported SRX[start with 155s]
-needle clip position 4 with washers on top of clip
-vents OUT of airbox and hanging under carbs just like an SRX...VERY Important!
-SRX Rear cooler
-SRX heads modded for Viper or at least an Opticool head gasket and SRX base gasket
-Premium fuel
-clutched for 8750

As I stated earlier this is only a suggested starting point and you would have to proceed very cautiously or you could end up with severe engine damage!

Whatever you do keep us posted!

What would this SRX base gasket do for a stock viper motor, i have mine pulled apart now and need a gasket kit, just wondering if i should get an SRX base gasket or go with stock?

srx gasket evens out the cooling. as long as your motors already apart, just throw in the srx gasket.
