Any Taurus Sho owners out there?

Just had a friend on here pick me up a Taurus SHO in mass. Will be a spare car for the family and my daughters daily driver. Black of course, 93. They can be a mechanical nightmare but the nice thing about them is that there is a wealth of information about them and common issues, much like TY.
You got to love, power of a Mustang GT from a Yamaha V6.
 
nice. those things make wicked power. too bad the trannys are the weak point. brothers buddy had one he put 20lb of boost throgh on stock bottom end. took it for 3 years of drag racing on the strip.

A little week down low but they spin up real nice.

I have most of the service info available (work shop manual, PC/ED) including TSBs if need be. FMS used to offer a complete engine assembly including EEC harness and PCM. Always wanted to stuff one in a sand rail.

There is a sand rail on youtube with one fully polished.

people put them in everything, probes, fieros, escorts, mustangs ranger pickups.
you can buy them cheap, for what they are.

would you want to sell the service manuals?

It depends... The earlier ones were DOHC 32 Valve Yamaha Built V6's... The later ones (like a buddy of mine still has) used IIRC Ford Built 3.4 DOHC Transverse V8's... They were junk IMO (the V8s) as they were plagued with cam problems (the lobes would "break off" on the journals) resulting a lot of bent valves, hurt feelings, tears, and damaged heads. They were a PITA to time also... IIRC, book time for the motor swap in my buddies 98 was 32.6 labor hours!!!! However, the Yammie V6's were pretty BA, a little quirky, but good runners and reliable. Many of the V6 models came with manual trannies too! An old friend had one of those. Fun car.
 
I have 3 of them myself, 2 '94s and a '90. If you want take a peek at shoforum.com just like TY but with all the SHO knowledge you could ever ask for.

The 3.4 had cam sprocket issues, the sprockets actually would spin on the camshaft, once that happened it was game over.

The V6 runs good when maintained, a Y Pipe is a MUST and if you feel frisky they take really well to boost. 400whp is not hard to get but I dont reccomend it on the ATX models. Fun cars, I love the looks on Mustang/Camaro owners face when they get walked by a 1990 Ford Taurus even a C4 has problems.

As I understood it Yamaha built the engine and I assume sourced some of the parts from various vendors just as is common for a company to do when building their own engines, moreso when it is a low production unit.

Did Yamaha have a part in designing the engine?
 
For what I know Ford sent them a variation of the vulcan v6 and Yami made some tweaks. The original intake didnt have the crossover tube and was rumored to make near 300hp. The only SHO to own is a MTX, oh yeah keep your burnouts to a minimum if you like your tranny to work.
 
cosworth made the v8 bottom end, not sure on the v6 cars. I wouldnt' give 10 cents for a 96 and up taurus, they took a decent looking car and made it into some kind of cartoon looking thing with a smily face and a round back window. Plus, no ground effects.
If it was for me only i would use a 3.2 and convert it to stronger version of the mtx. My daughter and wife will be driving it most of the time so the auto will work out better. I will have to resist the tempetation.

I will keep an eye out for a equal length y pipe and convert to the larger flex pipe, change the air intake a bit for now. Have to wait till my sled account is a little bigger before I start shopping.
 
Yes they are not cheap to mod, but when you do they are awesome cars. Ive got Tokicos and Eibachs on my gen 1 with ASFB's, and solid mounts corners are so much fun. Not to mention its got 266k miles on it, and runs like new getting 25-32 mpg. I do have a low mile 3.2 in the barn waiting for a blower :)

I finally got it going. What a weird car. It is fun to drive and then you remember your driving a 4d. It is a definate sleeper. It, like most yamahas, seems to accellerate for ever. A speeding ticket waiting to happen. Thanks for the help (you know who you are)
now for some paint on the top and maybe some pink powder coat on the intake system.

Now were talkin. Them girls these days love to show their colors. I love that mines proud to be a girl and show it. Is like "here i am and bring it on" watch out boys for this next generation of girls!
 
i know this topic is a little old, but it caught my interest.....

a friend of mine has 3 older v6 yamaha powered shos......some electrical problems, and 3 trannys. i believe the trannys were mazada??

for the v8 shos.....i had a '96 and my little bro currently has a '97. they are reliable as hell and more reliable than the v6's. all you gotta do is weld the cam sprockets to the cams, and no mechanical engine trouble will happen. they are kinda known to spit out a coil pack, or a alternator from rusting tight, from its location that's low and close to moisture. they have a nice audio system (IMO), nice climate control (IMO), cumfy seats, etc.

i would take a v8 sho over the v6 sho any day of the week.
