Questions on 02 Viper ER

I just inherited an 02 Viper ER from my brother who can no longer ride. It's been sitting a couple years and I know I need to clean the carbs, but I have a few other questions.
1. Is there any tricks / tips on changing the fuel filter in the tank??
2. I haven't check compression yet, but what would be a good number as far as compression it ran well for him but has 8800 miles on it.
3. The track is due for replacement will a Ice ripper XT 1.25" tack fit w/o problems
4. Are the shocks on these sleds rebuildable and where would be a good place to get that done?

  1. Fish the filter out of the tank with a small wire and replace it. A benda-light or similar can help see while you do this.
  2. In stock form compression is staggered and gauges vary a lot. I personally would be more concerned with wear. I would tear the top end down (easy job) and measure everything to ensure that it is within spec. That said it could easily run for quite a while without touching it, but you really can't tell for sure without measuring it. Compression testing alone can be very misleading.
  3. It will rub if left as is. Some just run them, but I prefer 8 tooth drivers.
  4. Yes, do a search and see links on here. Some like Pioneer, others Hygear, and there are a number of other good options.
Keep those carbs and exhaust valves clean and check the fuel pump for debris or crud.
 
Would a 1" prestudded Ice attack track which I believe is 1.063" or a 1" hacksaw with 1.075 studs clear w/o modifications. If so what number of studs would work good for thw Hacksaw and would either of these be a good trail setup for the viper. Thanks Again GIL
 
While you have the carbs off also check the reeds, Viper's have been known to be hard on reeds.
 
Yup on both. The hacksaw is a great track from reading. Go hacksaw and stud. We ride a lot of ice here. I have a 1" lug ultimate traxion on my wifes viper with a 124 studs down the middle. Works great on the ice and great on the trail (loose or hard snow). Good all around combo IMO.
 
Thanks for the replies. I found a deal on a 1" ice attack that I can always throw 96 studs up the middle if the "lug studding" isn't enough.
On the reeds what should I look for besides the obvious cracking or chipping??
One more question, what is everybody running for ski's on their vipers. I run mostly packs / icy trails, not much powder here in West lower Michigan?? Thanks Again GIL
 
Careful on studding an Ice Attack track. They are a single ply track so if you stud it (which is not recomended from the manufacturer) you need to use a larger head stud and backer.
I use the stock ski with SnowTrackers. This combo works well on hard pack and ice.
 
Thanks I'll look for a hacksaw and studs. Does anyone know where I can find a owners manuel for this sled? It would really help with the routine stuff. Thanks GIL

If the reeds are chipped or cracked anywhere below where they should seal, replace them.
