first off, i'm 18 and i'm a work-aholic, so i pay for all of my stuff. my parents recently checked my bank account for money transfers and found out i've been put quite a bit of green in the srx and not much is stayin in the account. they've threatened to take all that is theirs and MINE away if i don't quit spending money. Now granted, i'm not droppin thousands of dollars, but a ripsaw here, tunnel there, and thats the only big spenders other than the tmx 38's, and i still have a ways to go to finish my dream of a srx which i plan on keeping till the nations gas supply runs out! and also, i will be going to purdue university to study mechanical engineering and technology as well as a co-op working for Polaris. before you lose your cool, i will never part with my viper and srx, but i want a career here in the us (yamaha is in Japan) and close to snow and family. so i was just curious, do you think i am insane for putting this much money in with college on the way, or should i continue to pursue my dream? btw, i get basic college tuition free from scholarships so all i have to pay for is room and board, as well as books. thanks for your time!
 
Well, you are technically an adult, so nobody should say how you choose to spend YOUR money.
I can see your parents' point. It would be smart to put away as much money as you can for living expenses so that when you are in college studying can be your main and ONLY focus. You dont want to be working 20-30 hours a week as well as going to school, cause thats pretty rough. I do think your folks could have gone about it in a better way though.
By the way, sxviper32, you dont have to move to Japan to work for Yamaha. They have quite a lot of operatioins right here in the USA. In fact, their north American snowmobile headquarters is located in Wisconsin. Where I ride (Minocqua) you often see Yamaha engineers out testing sleds.
In fact, this past weekend I was up in Minocqua to do some riding and we were pulled off to the side of the trail taking a break. All of the sudden this sled comes by,painted matte black with no decals but did say "YAMAHA" on the seat, it looked like an RX-1 but had these huge air vents in the hood. Also, when the rider cracked open the throttle coming out of the corner it sounded kinda like a rally car because it had some turbo whine to it.
I dont know if this was a prototype but weve seen pre-production Yamahas on the trails up there before.
Dont rule out working for Yamaha completely. If you can get in a program working for Polaris, I say do it for no other reason than for the experience. If nothing else, working for Polaris will make you realize how great being a Yamaha owner really is.

yea yamaha is the way to go if you ask me try to get into working on yamaha's then you can learn more about the sleds we all love on this site. good point hebi
 
I just graduated from college this past year. Now that Im done and have a decent job, I still look back at the stupid spending that I did over the past years and finally realize. Shit,... I did have a great time but the 25 grand I owe now to college not counting the truck I bought another 10 grand.......35 grand total... makes me think. Did I spend it wisely or not? But I can say I do have a college degree....my own two cents..... Life is to short!! Live it up bro!! just dont overdo it ;)!
 
thanks for all your help! hebi, i didn't know yamaha had a research center over here? i looked all over the place to get in a co-op there for college. btw, i should have also mentioned that the co-op employee earns on average $50,000 over 3 years. and that is while you are in college! thanks again for all your input!

p.s. will get pics up as soon as it is not in pieces! haha, all i have is boxes of carbs, skis, etc, bulkhead, track.... still need the tunnel before i can get started!

Maybe if you explain yourself to them, let them know that school is first, but it's your passion to work on sleds. Let them know that your willing to for-go all the expensive beer drinking, and other luxury items at school so you can work on your sled. Most spend more on expensive clothes and partying than you will on your sled. Beside working on a sled, or anything, will play a huge role in your understanding as a mechanical engineer. Example, my best friends doughter is currently studying in houghton, (michigan tech)to become a mechanical engineer, and her expierence with off road racing has elevated her knowledge, and sparked her with motivation. The makings of a true winner. The best engineers always take their work home with them. Trust me I know alot of them! Whether it be motorcycles, airplanes, kites, boats, cars, ECT. Good luck to you, I hope you come to a fair compromise with the parents.

P.S. I make $75 thousand a year, and have never owned A new vehicle. I have extra money, and my house is almost paid for. There are ways around being in debt. People pis money away on stupid stuff like onstar/gps guidance and cell phone bills. Was it that important to call all of those people? I can get A map for a buck! Or the newest BS, TV in your minivan, don't we get enough of that? I don't need power windows, for a thousand bucks, I'm stong enough to role them down myself. I would much rather spend that thousand on my sled! NUF said!

Yea thats the kinda chick I want, then someone with more cash comes along,...... and theres always someone with more. I don't have a cell phone, and with the jack$ I see friends spend on that shi*, I could have bought all of the aftermarket stuff on my sled! I guess some people would rather talk on the phone about how fast there sled could be. I'm just saying spend it on what you really want. If your gonna do something, go all out. Maybe if nystateboy would have studied a little harder, he wouldn't have to pay $25 grand for school? Like, wow what a concept.
 
Chances are you will never regret the college("I wish I didnt do that")
You may kick yourself for overspending on the sled.(I've done that)

Stay Practical, but have fun
 
they pretty much told me that with the way things look acedemically and i guess there aren't many (if any) other students going in that direction so there isn't really any competition.
 
Many students look for positions in the motorsports field. I know this from experience, and from other forums similar to this. Unless you know someone I wouldnt be so confident.

It seems to me that, you have a pretty good head on your shoulders, I mean if you are only 18 and have 2 sleds and money to put away, you must
be doing something right, not to mention you have got a scholarship to pay for school. Im 28 and my parents still hassle me about where my money goes, thats what they do they are parents. You know what you want and what you have to do, as long as you keep a balance between both and make sure you have the money you need to survive, whats a part here and there. You know what you want to aspire to, if my dad didnt tinker with his cars when he was young he may have never became a mechanic and now one of the top service directors in the midwest, but he made sure food was on the table and bills got paid. And now years later has all the toys he ever wanted and thats what hard work gets ya! and if you have extra money and your ducks are in a row, do what you want.

Its the old school mentality, of having to work for what you wanted and knowing the value of a dollar and that at anytime something might happen so put that money away. We are a ME generetion we want it now and if we dont have the money we go out and get a credit card and run that F'er up and then spend 30 years paying it off.

Im rambling but I will say I have never heard a parent say they wish their kids a harder time than they had, they want better for you than what they had.

Hell Ya!!!

HELL YA, no matter what i was gonna continue building it. i feel like i've failed whenever i abondon something (which i usually don't do) so i really hate to just give up. i'm gonna finish it and keep it the rest of my life to show my son when he gets old enough (or daughter) to show them. and when they get crazy ideas, i'll make sure they know what they are doing so they hopefully don't regret it (some i will let them go so they live and learn) as well as back them up on it. its my dream, of course i'm gonna build the "BOSS HOSS"!!!! peace, thanks for everyones help!!!
 
Yup, Yamaha has a snowmobile test facility in northern Wisconsin.
You might not think of this as an option, but you could also study in Japan.
When I turned 18 I went to Japan to get an engineering degree. I wanted to study in Japan because I knew that the schools over there would push me to my limit and would give me the best possible experience.
Unlike here in the US, college in Japan is not about partying, its about getting the best possible education.
I got grants to pay my tuition and the only obligations I had was that I had to teach an english class in my free time.
Studying in Japan was a real once in a lifetime experience and its something that I would do again without even so much as a second thought.
Im not saying thats the right thing for everone to do. Not everyone could leave their family for 5 years to study at a school that is halfway around the world.
Something for you to think about...
