I pulled my sled out today for my first ride and after letting it warm up I tried to put it on the trailer and it backfired through the exhaust and seperated the pipe from the muffler. I reinstalled the pipe and started the sled and the same thing happened. I had just installed brand new ngk's so I removed them and installed another new set and the problem went away. I rode for about 2 hours with no problem. I'm guessing that I had a bad plug, but they were brand new! Anyone else ever had this happen?
 
yep, you can foul a new plug, old gas and the extra fuel from sitting along time kills plugs like mad...or getting on the gas too quick without it being warmed up.

Get the motor warmed up after an easy ride, and put those 'new' plugs back in, I bet it won't backfire again.

That kind of boom happens when a build up of fuel loads up the pipe or muffler, and ignites after the carbs. Probably not your plugs fault, unless there was a fouled plug and you let it run anyway warming it up. If you've got triple pipes on it, you can touch each pipe and check for a cool one if you think one cylinder is getting goofy. Careful though, those things can be hot :)
 
My 600 backfires often after startup unless I let it TOTALLY warm up (like idle for 10 minutes or more) I've had to replace the manifold-to-pipe gasket twice now.

Yup Happen to me last year on the 03' 600 triple. What I was doin wrong was hitting the kill switch before letting it idle down causing fuel to load up in the exhaust pipe and the next time you start the beast-blamo!
 
Maybe a safer trick rather than touch the pipes to see which one is hot and which is cold, I always grab a little snow and trickle it onto each individual pipe, the pipe that doesn't melt the snow is the bad one! No burnt hands or melted gloves.

My 700 has always been cold blooded, but once she is warmed up ---poifect
