Hey guys,

I just picked up a 97 Vmax 700 SX with 6800 miles. It runs good but has a hole in the front exchanger from a pulled out stud so I got it for $500. I'm looking for any info on common problems to look for while I tear it down for some much needed TLC before the snow falls.

I got it home and compression tested it which was between 100-105 psi between all three cylinders. Seems low so I'm sure it will need rings. I took the head off and the pistons look good and no scoring on the walls.

Any suggestions on places to pick up the rings for OEM pistons? I also need an exhaust gasket and already have the Winderosa top-end gasket kit.

Also, I was given a spare heat exchanger but it has been repaired already so I would like to buy a new one or used one in new shape. Any suggestions on where to pick one up?

Lastly, what's the specs for a replacement track (pitch, windows, etc...)? The track is in ok shape but has a ton of studs and two already pulled out. I prefer no studs.

Thanks,
Here's a picture:

don't bother, it cant be fixed. I'll give you your 500 bucks back to take it off your hands..lol
that's a great deal you got there, the exact thing i'm trying to find right now for my wife to ride this season. like yammiegod said just get it welded. if youre unsure about the welded replacement just leak test it first on your garden hose. easy enough with some heater hose and some hose adapters. you can get your rings through many of the site sponsors here like portyamaha.com

Easiest way to fix that hole is to pull the skid and track, since you're thinking about a new track you'll need to anyway. So pull the skid and track and bring the sled into a welder, they should be able to fix it without removing the heat exchanger. Removing the heat exchanger and replacing or repairing it is a lot of work. Did I say a lot of work? YES!! A lot of work!! But you got a good deal on a great sled that will last you a long time!! Awesome!!

Thanks so far! I'm thinking about testing the extra exchanger I got to see if it holds. I wasn't sure how much pressure it should take but shouldn't be much. My house well is at 36 psi so the garden hose should work well to test it. It has a little dent in it and the fins are bent in one area but the weld looks pretty good.

I'll be tearing it apart this weekend and removing the track and skid completely so I can go over the suspension and replace the jackshaft bearings, chain case oil, etc... Pics to come.

staggs65, I'll sell it to ya for $1000. ;)!

Nice! Sounds like my project Ive been working on. Except mine had a melted piston along with the bad exchanger.

I removed my front heat exhanger and replaced with a used one. It was A LOT of fun...haha

Almost all the bushings in my rear skid were worn out...good times!!

I just got mine back together and putting the finishing touches on it.

Good Luck with yours!

Welcome

:wel: Welcome Dmace,
I deliberated buying that sled for awhile myself. Pretty cheap money and a good project to get into before the snow flies. How the w arm on it? Thought it needed some suspension work. I dont know, I could be wrong. Either way, smokin deal for a nice sled! I was wondering if someone was going to buy it and how low the price would go.
There is a ton of info on this site just search or ask away. Most of these guys have been doing this a long time and really know their stuff.
Again, Welcome..... :letitsnow :letitsnow

welcome to the site Dmance!! as you can see and im sure have allready noticed, this site and its users have a wealth of knowledge on anything yamaha. sounds like you have a great project ahead of you! go ahead and start a thread in the working log section and we would love to follow your build!! good luck and stay blue! ;)!

Thanks again everyone!

Yeah, that W arm is broken in 4 places and the hole in the exchanger went right through the sub frame. Needless to say, after about 3 hours of knuckle bumping I have the track and skid out, air box/carbs/exhaust removed and just need a clutch puller before I can remove the entire engine. Once that's out of the way, I can replace the exchanger with the used one and install the "new" used track I have. Also I'll be replacing the rings, jackshaft bearing, a couple of idler wheels on the rear skid as well as the sliders.

Even with all this work, I should have a real nice sled for under $1k and be happy until I get that 4-stroke Nytro next spring. ;)!

I'll start a new thread in the working log area with pictures.

I found that sled my friend was coming to Nh to work next week he was gonna buy it and bring it back to maine so him and I could fix it. Well at lest it went to a good home and did not get boned out.

Small world huh? ;)!

I'll have it in better than new shape before the snow falls and ready to rip. I can't wait to see how well it pulls and handles the smooth trails. I know there is no better sound than a smooth 3 cylinder Yamaha 2-stroke.

10 4 Clutch her up youl love it
The rollers and weights are in good shape but in case I decide to clutch it, what's the recommended setup? I read about lowering the top drive sprocket by one tooth but want to ride it first before making drastic changes.

If you are looking for a trail setup, this was posted in the TY Tech section:
