'97 700SX Project is NOW a '98 700 XT Project!

Just picked up a project sled for this fall. I haven't ridden since 2006 when I had a pretty good accident on my Viper.
Lucky to be alive! Thank you God!
It's a '98 XT 700. Bender can, 1.25" Predator track

welcome to the site.
you will be able to find most any parts you need here in the classifieds or post in the wanted section. you'll also be able to get help with just about any problem that might arise during your rebuild from the other members here. good luck getting the sled back up to par and getting back into the sport

Also there is site sponsers on here with good parts deals as well. Can't wait to see pictures of the build.

Thanks guys for the responses. I will get some pics up once I bring it back to my house. (Its in storage at a friend's house.)
When I had my previous sleds, I did the normal maintenance items like bearings, hyfax, belts and grease zirks. But I have never had the need to touch clutching at all. Can anyone post pics of what the clutches physically look like on the '97? I boght this with the secondary in a box. I don't know if this is the original?
Please see first post for other questions. Thanks in advance!

When you get to the skid, inspect it real well, make sure the W-arm is OK, don't be surprised if you find some cracks, have it welded and reinforced. There is a write up somewhere here for that, just do a search for W-arm. Have the shocks rebuilt also, usually is pretty reasonable. Clean the face of the clutches with a scotch-brite and brake cleaner & some air. Clutches are like anything, pretty easy as long as you take your time and go slow...

I never noticed any cracks on either of my 600 SX-Rs. The '99 had 3200 miles on it when totalled and the '00 had almost 6000 miles on it when sold. Was this an issue on the earlier rear skids or all of them?

Finally brought it home late last night. Leaving for vacation tomorrow, so I won't be digging into it until next week.
I was able to discover the speedo cable wasn't hooked up. Don't know what this might mean?

Could be a sign that the speedo stopped working and someone didn't put it back together (usually due to a PTO side drive axle bearing going out and taking the key with it). Try spinning the inner cable and see if the gauge responds. If so, pull the bearing cover/speedo drive and have a good look at the axle bearing.

Or, someone disconnected it to keep the mileage down.

I will look at that when I get back. My intentions are to replace all the bearings anyways. Sled odometer reads almost 6000 miles.

Well...now I'm not sure what to do. Found a great deal on a '98 700 XTC. Might just sell the '97 700SX or possibly part it out. At least I can hit the snow running without any work to do.

Thought you said you didn't need a long travel suspension....<--Pullling your leg...
Well keep the '97 for now as alot of the parts will innerchange, or you can part it out over the winter and make some money for riding...

LOL. Yeah, I knew that was coming. Will the transfer control rods switch over? The '97 has aftermarket quick change rods.
