What is this thermo housing bolt for?

What is this coolant housing bolt for on top?

Another member was trying to tighten this bolt on his 99 SX 500 and had a coolant loss coming from "somewhere" on the sled

if i am correct it has a small hole in the side of the bolt ...and is used to bleed air from the cooling system
 
That is to bleed the air from the cooling system. When you change or top off your coolant, you start the machine and drive it around a little at different angles (up hill, down hill, each side etc...) to work the air bubbles to the top of the system which is at that bolt. Then remove the bolt to release the air while topping off the coolant level. Do this 2 or 3 times and you'll be air free.
 
Hey guys this is actually my sled, thanks so much to Tom for starting this thread. Was it normal to have coolant dripping out of the bottom of my sled when this bolt was loosened?

And does this bolt have a small hole in the side or is it just a standered bolt because the head broke off last night and i had to drill it out, wondering if i can just replace with a standard metric bolt?
 
i might have a old housing from a sled i stripped ill look and see if so its your free of charge
 
If I remember correctly, it's just a standard metric bolt with a washer. If you can't find one, the Yamaha part number is 95807-06012-00.

Also, it should only be leaking coolant under the sled if it's leaking from the bolt hole while purging the system.
 
I shouldnt need a new housing, I was able to remove the broken bolt by drilling it out and then it just threaded the rest of the bolt out (fhewww!)

And the coolant only started leaking out when I loosened that bolt on the top of the bolt which makes me think it was possibly just pressure in the system? Cause it has never leaked before and all I did was loosen that bolt on top of the thermo housing...
 
no holes in that bolt. it is a flange style bolt but can easily be replaced with a standard head bolt and a copper washer.

if its loose, it will leak, as it it a bleed screw.
 
So being that, that bolt is the only one I touched in the cooling system and it caused coolant to start dripping out of the bottom of the sled is it safe to assume once i reattach housing and get a new bolt and re-add antifreeze itll be fine?

that would be a fair assumption. but, there are a few other places leaks can form and it could be simply that you didnt notice the leak before.

could be a hose, impeller seal, gasket, just to name a few spots.

thats the way my luck runs, never the simple thing. but, you can certainly easily eliminate that as a source.

Just the way things happend was, was loosen bolt and a second later coolant comes pissing out of the bottom, thats why Im hoping the 2 are tied together !
 
i found the housing but the bolt was removed so that means its in the bucket thats about half full of extra nuts and bolts ...jd says he has one hope he can hook you up if not ill dig thru the bucket for you
 
Otherwise I can just go get a standered metric bolt and washer to throw in there.

Whats the best antifreeze to re-put in my sled
 
Well I guess Im not sure what to do.

When the bolt head broke off I tossed it and the washer.

Previously on the thread this part number was given for it 95807-06012-00

So just go with a bolt and washer from the store or order it from my dealer???????
 
Ok ill do that tomoro then!

So is 50/50 car antifreeze the kind I should put in my sled? And how do I know when its full?
