Building '96 Vmax 600 xt out of 94 Vmax 600 ST parts - questions

So, I bought a 94 Vmax 600 ST (extended track) in the spring. Found some motor problems, so I tore it down. Once the motor was out, I found the frame was ever so slightly tweaked. So, I bought a chassis and suspension (with bars, steering, and tank, but no motor or drivetrain) from a '96 Vmax 600 XT (standard track, but more suspension travel). I have a few questions...

The only thing I really need is a track. I understand I need a 121"x15" track. With the '96 suspension, what is the tallest lug size I can use? I'm thinking 1" or 1.25", but I found a post somewhere that said I would need 8 tooth drivers to go bigger than 1" - i'm assuming they meant the drive lugs in the front of the track. The ones out of my ST have 9 teeth or lugs on them. So, how big can I go? How big can the studs get? Do I need the smaller drive part, and if so, is it a torque issue or a clearance issue? I found a 1.25" track with 1.4" studs locally on craigslist that I might investigate, if it will fit.

What are the differences in the drive between the XT and the ST? Are the drive and driven gears different sizes for the long track ST? If so, how much different and what kind of performance difference will this get me?

I see the cooling system is different - substantially less coolers on the XT than on the ST. Is there any value to hanging on to some of those coolers from the ST and adapting them to the XT? Looks like a pain in the ***, not something i really want to tackle if I don't have to.

I am just starting the actual build on the '96 chassis, so I'm sure i'll come up with a few more questions. Thanks for your time!
 
A 1- 1/4 will not fit in the xt unless you relocate the rear mount down or use smaller wheels at that point, there are clerance issues there.
 
I have a 1.25 ripsaw in my xt right now,it rub's a little bit on the heat exchangers up front. I am going to switch to a shorter lug so I can use stud's.My sled has stock driver's and a viper skid installed,i've put probably 800 mile's on with that track and have had no problem's.

Anyone have one for sale? I'll trade you a 136" track...

Anyone know if the gears in the chain case are different? The guy I bought the XT off of said he thought the gears with the long track might be lower (greater reduction, more acceleration torque, lower top speed) but he wasn't sure. The case is apart, I can count the teeth if anyone can tell me how many teeth a stock XT chain case has.

Another question - while I have the motor out, should I get a oil injection blockoff and pre-mix? I have the oil pump from '94, but if there's risk of failing a line or the pump I'd just as soon block it off and go pre-mix.
 
Technically there is always a risk however, i would never want to premix especially out on the trail.

The pumps are "suppose" to fail open meaning they dump more oil, line failure could happen however if you properly re-install and secure all lines and check for cracks etc.. then bleed the pump correctly you should not have any issues.
 
the ST is geared one tooth lower on the top than the XT. ST is 20/37 - XT is 21/37. The affects of changing to the lower gearing will give you more bottom end and less top speed.
 
I picked up a 1" track off ebay, with studs. Seller said studs were 1.175, i'm measuring them at 1.25" from the outside face of the track.

The XT I'm building doesn't have any heat exchangers in the front of the tunnel, just the long ones that run the length of the top of the tunnel.

Will I have any clearance issues? I'll obviously check as I install it (today) but I'm also worried about the track moving under deceleration and making contact.
 
The track is pretty close to the heat exchangers in the tunnel. It may hit, but just the rubber - the studs are offset away from them. If there was a front heat exchanger in this sled, no way, this track would tear it up. There's only like 1/2" clearance to the front of the tunnel.

The studs might hit the rear heat exchanger but only under full compression. I guess I'll have to wait and see on that. There are some marks on there from previous contact.
