I want to put a fresh belt on my new to me Viper project and was wondering what belt (brand / model) everyone is running. Please list any good or bad experiences as I want to thin the possibilities down. Thanks

Most here run oem belts. A few ultimax users.

OEM here. I believe they are a harder compound. Should get more life out of it.
The stock Yammi -8DN belt for both my Apex and Mt Viper.

i use OEM 8dn belt. best belt there is. ultimax belts are a joke.
Like many things in life, there may be a good amount of opinion which one is "best". I run ultimax on my sled. Comes with a 1 year warrantee. Oem's dont to the best of my knowledge. My .02
we only use the yamaha 8dn belts on the rxwar's viper and venture. the other belts tend to be softer and wear out prematurely on the higer performance sleds. the ultimax 8dn works fine on my brothers modded sx500r as he needed a tougher belt than stock as it was burning 1 a day.

Me and my dad both run oem yamaha belts. We got a ultimax one time and ended up taking it right back. They are longer then oem belts and cost more.

oem here also, only thing ive ever run any different was an old v-max 4 800 from maximum performance they claimed 189 hp when i got it from em, used gates extreme on it trail riding cause they lasted a little longer but still didnt grab as good, we used oem on that also when we went drag racing.
tough to beat oem here

I have used only OEM Yamaha drive belts since 1990. On my SRX and RX-1 sleds, I can easily get over 4000 miles on a belt before it is worn down to the minimum thickness. Some of my friends have used aftermarket drive belts on their Yamahas and have to replace them much more often.. OEM belts are the way to go.

I stick to oem only. The 8dn-17641-00-00. Or whatever that exact number is off the top of my head. To my point, i try to find the 17641-00. A few years back the changed to 17641-01-00. They are supposed to be the same but i think they are slightly thinner. I dont have a micrometer to check exact specs but from just using them they sit lowere in the secondary and seem out of spec from start. The 00 seem right on for belt height right out of box. Just my 2cents, but im out of spec too so who knows.
Anyone ever try using the Dayco Belts.

I used to ran the Ultimax belts for a couple years. They grip better and you have to change your clutching a little to deal with it.
We've now gone back to OEM belts after I blew a second Ultimax belt at about 100mph and broke all the primary clutch weights off. This stranded me about 55 miles from our trailer. I don't remember that any of our group has ever blown an OEM belt.
