Canadian buying a sled in NY State

Good day guy's,
I am planning of buying a Nytro XTX from a guy in NY state. This guy owes some $$ on the sled. Off course, I will be paying him cash $$ for it. In Ny State the sleds are not titled. Will I be able to cross the border with the sled after US Customs holds the registrations of the sled for 72 hrs? What are the documents that I will have to drop at US Customs? Is it risky? What if the person takes the $$ and instead of reimbursing the credit company, he goes to the casino and spend it all there? Can this have an impact on me?
 
Your right there is no title, you get a certificate of orgin. When you get your N.Y.S registation the certificate gets handed in and the registation is now your proof of ownership. Thsi seller will need to get the lein released from the bank in order to sell it to you. If the loan is un-secured then you are safe. Thats means opon cash payment and signing of the registation from the seller you would be in the clear. The bank will come after him (the money) and not the sled. Also get a written recipt from him with both signatures.
 
Ok but how do I know then if the sled is paid for or not if there is no title for sleds in NY State? I imagine that the owner has the registration in his pocket so what is the document that the bank holds and gives back to the owner of the sled when the sled is paid for?

That's why they retain the registration for 72 hours to make that there is no monies or other issues with that particular title.
 
I understand that but, me as a buyer, how can I make sure the sled is paid for before getting to the border? Do you have an idea?
