Some of you might have seen the other thread about my trouble with my flippin Tach......

I swapped out a 600 twin for a 600 tripple.... the tripple had electric start and reverse which I did not install..... the Tach from the twin would rev 2-3 times the correct RPM.... I acquired the original Tach that went to the tripple and installed it.... no RPM.... it worked on the old sled for sure!!! I tried grounding the tach... no luck.... so from another suggestion I ran a jumper wire from the CDI all the way directly to the Tach.... that worked for idle, but as soon as it gets to 3,000 it falls flat and reads 0 RPM!! Also.... if the jumper is plugged in the sled will not start!!!!

HELP!!!!!

You swapped out the compete wiring harness right anlong with the cdi box? What year 600 tripple 600 motor was it a dual bulb or singlee bulb?

^^^^ Yea did you also swap out to the triple wiring harness? When you swap differnt year motors, all electrical has to go with it or you will run into electrial problems as there were upgrades to electrical just about every year or 2.

IE, even somthing as simple as the donor motor was wired electrically to dual hand warmers will complicate the swap going into a sled with single warmers. You practically need a complete donor sled to make it work right.

2001 Venture.... so it has the single bulb but the large gauges .....

And yes I now have every part from the donor.....

I used the harness from the donor...... but I removed the plugs for all the e start and reverse..... I untaped the harness back to a solder junction and removed only the one wire I didn't need and taper it back up....... only to find out the plugs for those components are on every harness...lol

does the background light come on with either tach? Do you notice a difference in brightness?

Yes it lights up..... if I jumper straight from the CDI to the Tach brown wire to brown wire the Tach works at idle ........ wierd.....if I give it a little throttle the Tach stops working at about 3,000..... It also will not start if the jumper is plugged in.....

I FEEL FOR YOU MAN!!!!!Got to be something simple.Sit down relax a bit and think it out. Then simlpy go over everything again nice and slow ...might be a simple thing.Best to get a good night sleep and start fresh the next day.I have done this numerous times..just walked away from it for a bit and after a few times coming back..I have always found the problem and it was actually simple. But if you go off in a rage as I usually do...it usually won't be solvedDon't know why it would cut out at 3000 if it actually idles, something funny there. You really need a good electrical person here that knows his stuff...

check all wires under the handlebar pad also..I had mice chew up wires there and I was getting eratic symtoms that I could sense...also last year when I melted some of my wire on the harness because I re routed the harness over the pull start,my exhaust pipe burnt thru some.My sled started to run as if one 1 ccl..lights went and tach stopped ..I was getting a ground(arching to the pipes) .Barly made it home and I was 5 miles out yet..a lot of back firing also...thought I blew the motor.Sometimes when you have the motor runing at night, shut all lights off and observe in darkness if there is any sparks or arching going on, if there is anything arching..you will see it.

You might have mentioned it but did you swap out the CDI box too?

I did swap the CDI..... but your probably thinking exactly like me.....wondering if the e start CDI is different???!!!

I need to check some part numbers I think!!!

Disconnect the original tach wire, If you haven't already, As close to the stator as possible...If you still have that wire connected, It might be grounding out causing this problem. Just a thought.

Is the Tach the only thing getting a signal from that brown wire???

You said that you removed all of the plugs and wires for the electric start, is there a chance that you removed the 2 plugs that get hooked to each other? Sounds like you need to go over the wiring harness wire by wire and compare it to the diagram in the service manual, something has to be missing.

Yup... FOR SURE!!!!

I've been looking for a wiring diagram for a couple hours...... every website I go to is garbage it seems...... spending way too much time reading about issues, none of which pertain to a motor swap turned into a faulty Tach!!!..... I'll just have to spend more time looking for a good wiring schematic.......

The long way is always the right way .... but most of the time it is always the last way!!!!!

ANYONE HAVE THE WIRING SPECS FOR AN '01 600 Redhead tripple???

Can someone PLEASE tell me the color of the two wires that need to be connected!!!

And the amp of the correct fuse..... I can just strip and rewire a fuse block...!!!!!

THIS MIGHT BE THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL....!!!!....
