does the sled run perfectly, and the rmps just mess up?because the rmp gagues are different, change them to, it might work, a friend of mine had 600 triple gagues on a 700 triple, and didnt work the best, it was showing more rmps, so change the gague, it might work to, just a suggestion

I did swap gauges.... Im using the original gauges that were paired with this motor from the factory!!!
I did find something interesting when looking at the info for the 01 Venture. It says to never disconnect the battery cables while the engine is running or the rectifier and regulator will be damaged. I think the tach goes thru the rectifier! Not too sure with out having wiring diagrams to look at how you go about taking electric start off the Venture.

yeah..... you always get ghosts and gremlins when you dont make a complete and exact swap.....
I would think the regulator and rectifier issue with unhooking the battery would mean the battery is wired so it acts as a sort of capasitor......
anyone think this could be a regulator rectifier problem???
I never had the sled running and unhooked the batt..... just never installed the battery or wiring......
I think I'm gonna try to find an '01 wiring harness out of an SXR 600!!! as far as I can tell the long road I have traveled has created an '01 SXR..... which would have been a bunch cheaper to buy to begin with!!!!!
Thanks for the info!!!
Changing the harness will be the best bet! Just do a search and you should be able to find the harness cheap. Only thing I can think of is to be sure the CDI and stator plugs/wiring are the same. You may have to go back to the same year to get the same plugs/wiring.
AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well....... It is definately NOT the Harness!!!
I got a harness from an '01 SXR on Ebay, swapped out last night....... still no Tach!!!
I looked for the plug discussed previously that I thought I needed for a fuse..... still not on the new harness...... the only additional plugs are two single wires with female waterproof ends near the reg&rect and a second white triangular plug that looks like the Stator plug.......
Anyone have a aftermarket tach for super cheap...... I would love to put it on my $4,000 POS SXR/XTC/Venture/Frankenstein HEAP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol...sorry to hear that.Electrical can make you tear your hair out..Must be the tach itself then.

It is the original Tach..... 3,443mi..... it worked when it came out with the rest of the motor and guts, I just can't believe it could go bad in transit....
I have gone over and over the wire harness and diagram..... the only thing I see is the "condenser" that I don't know about or where it is..... I have a condenser from my 600 twin (the one attached to the gauge pod) that has the correct color wires according to the schematic but I'm afraid to jimmy rig it to fit this harness...... capasitors hooked up to too much power go boom....... and that is exactly my luck..... take off an arm!!!
Can someone with an SXR or other 600 redhead tell me where and how the condenser is wired into the harness...???!!!!
Thanks!!!
i have 2 viper springs at my house.
thstorms, if you have an 01 SXR harness, it has the plugs! I have 3 of them here in front of me right now and they all have it. I am also putting electric start on one right now and have the fuse box for that in my hand(electric start only). Look for a black plug that would be by your left knee. They are plugged to each other if no electric start. See picture
There is nothing plugged into the gauges at all, just the harness.

DUDE....... I definately dont have that thing.... LOL!!!!
.....and the harness I have definately doesn't have a place for it to plug in!!!
I bought a harness off Ebay for an '01 SXR looking for those plugs, the harness I have is almost identical to the old one.... except it doesn't have a cut and spliced "jumper wire" near the CDI, and has an extra plug near the Stator plug..... white and triangular(starter motor and relay plug), and the 2 wires for the reverse buzzer....... thats it......
The only plugs near the left knee are the fuel sending unit, oil sending unit, and reostat for heated grips..........
What actually plugs into that fuse block????
Pulling my hair out long enough!!! Guess I'll try a different Tach.......
I need 8DF-83540-42-00
Out of a NON-ELECTRIC START 600...... looks like just about any '99-'01 SX, Vmax, or MM with the big round gauges.....
I have a Perfect 8DM-83540-00-00 I would LOVE to trade for it!!!!
I'll pay shipping both ways!!!!!
PPLLLLEEEEAAAASSSEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well as usual a trip to AmatoSRX's Yamaha Showroom can solve all things Yamaha!!!
I took one of my Tachs with me to pick up some parts this weekend, while waiting for a batch of parts to come out of the Powder Coating oven we started testing it on sleds from different eras and comparing the differences.
The Tach wouldn't work on an '01 system with 2 Condensors so we tried it on a '98.... It worked!!!
I remember discussing there being a Condensor in the wiring diagram but nowhere to plug it in...... racking my brain, I thought I remembered the Venture having it mounted with the fuse block and solonoid for the E-Start so I wired the condensor to the spare white triangular plug by the stator plug...... and IT WORKS!!!!!
IT'S ALIVE!!!!
As usual I spent months and months trying to figure it out...... spent an hour at Pete's Paradise come home and try one thing and it's fixed!!!
Thanks 1,000,000 Pete!!!!!!!
other special thanks:
Sxr700bandit for providing me with a good copy of a wiring diagram
bluemonster1 for help with creative ideas and helpful work arounds to help save my sanity
tomseal6 for brainstorming with me and helping keep me headed in the right direction.
edunn69 for tracing wires and helping with the way Yamaha intended things to be.

thanks,,I feel happy for you now..good work.
Glad that you finally figured it out!
I knew it had to be something simple, but with out having the sled and parts in front of you it's hard to diagnose.

Good job figuring it out! I was an oem installer of yamaha outboards for a while after high school with a local boat builder. We had to set up the tach's by setting dip switches for the number of cylinders and 2 or 4 stroke, but by the sound of it these sled wiring systems are a whole different animal!!!
Now get out and ride as soon as the snow arrives!
