Phazer "sx" cut pistons

Ok Thanks for the reply, I know they had a "cut" to them but have never been able to measure them.
 
So once you start modifing, is the wiseco recomended over stock or cast type aftermarket? I have had a couple of phazer motors apart lately, all with wisecos and they are all scored pretty good, a couple with the ring lands spread apart so the rings are loose, one with a piston ring index pin actually pushed up and down till it came out of the top of the piston. None seemed to have that much run time or at least not much of a ring groove at the top. And all where running engines at the time I took them out, but were around 90 psi compression. None had any porting done, the most mod was a set of boyesen reeds.

I ran a set of wisecos in my old 91. piped, ported, switched to flatslides. I'd guess that youi had some sort of detonation issue which was rattling the pistons pretty hard. My was as reliable as an anvil, but it did need a little race gas to keep from rattling on a hard pull when it was warmed up. Fan just wouldn't move the heat out of the motor fast enough.
 
Only one piston on the engine with the ring lands bad and loose ring index pin was like this, but I pulled this motor shortly after I picked up the sled cause it had low compression, so it might had been beat on too. What flatslides did you use? I picked up a set of vmax 600 carbs but maybe should have picked up a set of 500's? Haven't even atempted to put the flatslides on, just be doing some research before hand, what do you recomend?

Do you or have you used a set? If so what mods and what jetting did you have?

I was just planning a aaen quite pipe, gutted air box, cold air intake, boyeson reeds for now with a possibility for some porting and "sx" pistons in the future.
 
Have similar mods. Aaen pipe, cold air kit, porting, carbon tech reeds, cut pistons and headwork. mains are pretty close at 150's pilots are close at 47.5. I do run race fuel. didn't have to change the needles at all from stock.

Awesome! I really apreciate the info, I was worried about the needles the most as I had heard that you couldn't get any for these carbs. My carbs are from a 1996 vmax 600. How much race fuel do you run and is it because of the head work? ( milled/ higher compression)?

My carbs have the following:
jet Needle- 9FLZ4
needle jet- 687/ Q-6
52.5 pilot
145 Main
2.5 cutout slide

I picked up 3 phazers the other day, a 1991 ST, 1990 electric start, and a 1989. All in nice shape for the vintage. The 91 ST even had the hot air exhaust on the clutch cover, so now I can make a fiberglass or aluminum copy. I also picked up a good motor the other day, and it had a nice set of Boyesen reeds in it also. Now I have a total of 5 phazers, extra parts and two extra motors.
 
I ran the 38's off a 600. Scrapped the oil injection and pre-mixed at 32-1. Ran a gallon or two of 110 every tank. Piped, ported, head work, pod filters, reeds, it worked awesome. Was good for about 80 horse. Mains were 155's, needles in the middle, and the pilots were whatever was in the carbs when I got them (don't remember.)

The only thing I want to stay away from is the 110, I don't want the hassel of trying to find some, pump gas only. Otherwise I would be all over that setup.
 
My local station has it at the pump so it wasn't bad. I generally fill at home and just carried a 2 gallon can on the back for those on the trail fill ups. I don't know if you get into the ports and the heads if you can keep one alive with some race fuel. The fan will only move so much air. Maybe if a guy had some of those trick Swain coatings applied to the heads and cylinders???
 
I was wondering if changing to a shorter belt and adjusting the top pulley apart farther would increase the fan speed enought to make any differance.
