Ok, I was able to get the sled to fire and i could tell right away that one of the cylinders wasnt firing. So i let it warm up, and the pto pipe wasnt hot. Pulled plugs and the pto plug was wet so i can tell its getting gas, pulled motor over and im getting good spark across the board. Carbs are in good order and plugs are good as well. Im thinking about starting off with the cdi first to narrow down the problem. Can i use my 01 or 02 srx cdi in my 98 or are they different? Im guessing no.

You will have to use a 98 or 99 CDI in your 98.

I would be suprised if your problem is a cdi issue. You can try switching plug wires between two cylinders and see if your problem persists as the 98/99 SRXs spark all three coils at the same time.[The 2000/01/02 SRXs and all Vipers fire each plug on an individual basis]

Other things to try:
-check compression[low compression can cause this]
-check those carbs again as plugged jets, stuck float, choke plungers ect could cause this issue.

I Would Pull All Three Plugs And Let It Dry Out For A Couple Hours, Try 3 New Plugs And Starting It With The Choke Off, Once Started You May Have To Feather The Choke A Bit, One Real Wet Cylinder Can Ruin A New Plug In Seconds, Give That A Try,
 
Compression should be good, i checked it when i bought it, but ill check it again and ill post what i find when i do.
 
ive seen bad fuel pumps do that before, and even switch cylinders in the middle of trouble shooting on me. make sure when u unplug your fuel lines from the carbs they should not leak any, if it keeps flowing then the pump is bad.

had bad stators do that also, that was really intermittent though, took me a while to narrow that one down cause it was so intermittend. start runnin fine till i got out on a ride then the games begin

Yea, def. all good suggestions. Im going to perform a leak down test tonight on the cylinders and see what i come up with. Meanwhile i will be checking and re cleaning the carbs. Its def. possible that somethings clogging the jet. Also a good time to see how the fuel pump is....all great suggestions and hopefully i can get some answers posted tomorrow. thanks guys.
 
Hey what kind of tricks are you guys using to find TDC on your cylinders and how are you solidifying the primary so the crank wont move? I'd like to do a leak down test today and it will be my first...:)
 
Performed a leak down test last night and one cylinder was def. leaking pretty badly. So it appears that my problem is probably a mix of

1. Bad gas...2 months old...with only one gallon in the tank. Also could of gotten some condensation in there.

2. and one cylinder thats got bad compression in it.

Im going to tear down all cylinders and check specs and so forth. The sled has 6500 miles. Had pistons and rings done at 3000...

for just doing a leakdown test, you can just use a long phillips head screw driver in the sparkplug hole, roll engine over via cutch till its at its highest point, then simply insert a long wooden dowel thru the clutch to keep it from turning. Then do leak down test.
