Reed Cage plastic thingee-ma-bob

That white plastic piece on the inside......I take it, that it's for directing air. Is it really necessary & what happens if left out?

Best i can do, i have no idea what it does but Per yamaha parts list it says reed valve spacer.

they are reed stuffers, help the transistion into the reed block, they will basicly help the low-mid throttle response, you need them... it will run without them but may have a low speed hiccup you cant get rid of.

they create laminar (straight line) air flow. Laminar air flow is very consistent. If left out you will get turbulant air flow which is very inconsistant. Also, the air being sucked into the inlet will run into the flat surface of the reed cage and stall which in affect creates a restriction to flow so your engine cannot pull in as much air during each cycle. Because of this the amount of air the intake system can flow cant keep up to the air flow demand of the engine and you will get spitting and sputtering when you quickly open the throttle and rough running at low RPM.
