This is my situation.I have opportunity to buy a 2004 viper S, 1,800mi., all stock exept dynoport can,or a 2001 SRX ,680 orig.mi., Viper reverse kit, studs, Olins package. Both machines have been serviced yearly(according to owners)and both are priced at $3,200.I think about moguls, fast trail riding and the fact that there are very few of these machines on the trail ,I think Viper S.I think about arm stretching triple pipe power, good handling on smooth trails and owning a legendary machine, I think SRX.?????????????

SRX all the way
you could put viper shocks on the SRX, or you could put triple pipes on the Viper.
Dunno if Id agree the Viper is better looking.

SRX all the way,you can always work on suspension, but ya can't beat the power of the srx

Man up here I could almost get that for just the SRX let alone both sleds !!!!!!
Owned an SRX, Bought a viper....quickly went back to an SRX...few years later decided to get another viper...quickly went back to an SRX.....Once you've felt the power of an SRX, the viper just won't cut it.

x2, in the process now of powering up my viper cause it didn't cut it after the srx, we will see when snow flies how close i get. i may end up going back to an srx also
i do like the look of them viper s (color scheme) and the ohlins up front though, the newer style controls on the handlebars along with better seat is nice too

I'm sorry,I'm not talking package deal(that would be sick!!).Each sled is priced at $3200 and looking at each machine requires a 3 hour ride. The Viper S does not have reverse, e.start,, or studs but,it is a mean looking machine. The SRX is in absolute showroom condition with reverse, studs, spare windshield and cover.
I guess I feel like $3200 is a lot of cash to dish out for a sled that's ten years old and a book value of $2400.On the flip side of that.....680 orig mi.,I guess you could throw that blue book value out the window. The Viper has alot of nice features, digital dash, bigger suspension,1.25 in. track, push button controls,etc..Viper is 3 yrs. newer and books at $3150.
I know whatever I do , I'll be doing this on the ride home. .

you you have the need for speed and some arm stretching riding>>>GO SRX ALL THE WAY.Vipers seem to have issues with their crank bearings,a lot of Vipers went down last season...your choice.I ride my SRX hard and it just keeps on ticking.I was going to buy a Viper years back but am happy I went to the SRX instead...
Never trust an odometer on a snowmobile. They take less then 10 minutes to swap... Showroom or not, a 10 year old sled is still a 10 year old sled. Still though, I would take the Srx over the viper. I've never had an issue with the sometimes harsh ride on the SRX. just comes with owning an original muscle sled .

Were all years of Vipers known to have this problem? I agree with the odometer swaps. It would take a real piece of S*** to pull that one on someone.I'm sure it happens alot.Should I check these machines with compression gauge?Still can't tell if bottom end is on way out unless you do leakdown test.Right?

Am I paying to much at $3200.Which machine is more reliable.

I beat my Viper to near death. Just keeps on going. Has over 7000 miles on it. Engine has never been opened. Just have to keep bending parts back to straight. Faster would be nice though, I like fast.
No way to really tell the condition of the bottom end with out taking it apart. Look for the obvious. Check for leaky seals with ether. Compression test is always a good idea. 3200 is too much IMO, even with low mileage. You plan on riding it right? That sled may be better off in a collectors hands who plans on sealing it in a glass dome. You can get a lot of sled with 3200$ Late models from all 4 manufacturers can be had in good shape for that amount of money. The premium you are paying for a low mile sled will disappear in less then a season.

Thanks for everybodys input.Much appriciated.I'm swaying towards the Viper as of right now.I do love the SRX's but most of my riding will be in the trails and I think the viper has enough power for the tight stuff.I think resale will be alot better with Viper S also,as you don't see many around. If I do get the SRX fever,I should have no problem finding a decent one for under $3000.I'll post pictures of the new ride after I get her home and all shined up!

Well im a viper s owner and a viper guy for sure. Viper gets the vote from me. Mine was piped now back to stock, and now for clutching. If you take care of them they all last forever. We have an advantage they didnt when the vipers were new. The guys before us worked out all the kinks. Now we just have to listen and go from there.

Don't be scared of reliability, I know alot of both sleds that go forever, little routine maint. And using good oil goes along way with these things.
I did see a few on here go down last year, most due to our shit gas, clogged pilot jets and so on. It did seem there were more vipers than srx's but I also see alot more vipers being ridden than srx. Seems to b 10 times more vipers out there compared to srx
