ok i have a vmax 600sx twin and i am going to put a 21 tooth top gear in it and i cannot seem to find the drain plug or oil fill for the chain case does yamaha have oil in the chain case? i came from acat sleds and i am completely oblivious to Yamaha sleds. also on my secondary clutch my the spring was in the lossest slot and i put it on a stand and the second the primary engaged the secondary would open almost 1/4 way so i pulled it off and put it in the tightest slot and it seems to open around 20mph on the stand i dont have snow yet so i am wondering how much of a difference on the bottom end the clutch and 21t gear is going to make other suggestions for more low rpm response would be appreciated i would like to pull the skis up easier and the only way i can see doing this is messing with the gearing and clutch i have tried countless suspension adjustments with no sign of pulling the skis not even an inch off the ground thank you in advance for answering my questions

The drain plug should be on the backside of the chain case near the bottom (you have to feel for it) and you fill the case thru the dipstick hole. Gil
thanks but i must be missing it i can even find the dip stick?gil7247 said:The drain plug should be on the backside of the chain case near the bottom (you have to feel for it) and you fill the case thru the dipstick hole. Gil
Its on the front side of the case (front of the machine). Either white or black plastic. And I dont think you want your secondary set where you have it now. It wont shift right. You need to find out what the stock settings were and put it back to that per Turks set up.

Have you ever had the chain case cover off to see what kind of crud is inside?

If you are planning on putting the new gear is you'll have to remove the front cover. Dont worry about draining the oil out before you remove the cover...
i just got the cover off and there is loads of metal shavings in there but the gears and chain show 0 signs of wear and the bearings roll smooth. it has a 22/39 gearing in it would you guys reccomend a 21/39 for more lowspeed power?A couple of bucks said:Have you ever had the chain case cover off to see what kind of crud is inside?

depends on your track you are using. If track lug was increased from stock..then drop a tooth on top.On the backside of the chaincase you will find drainplug. It will be exposed inside the tunnel.Lay on your back and stick you head in there..you will see it.It is #33 in the pic, just below where the driveshaft goes thru..simple to find.

thanks thats a help ful diagram i am running a 3/4 with 96 studs i plan on going with a 1 inch and 96 studsbluemonster1 said:depends on your track you are using.

Just so you know even if you do gear it down a little Yamaha's aren't really known for lifting the skis. They just go!
yeh i kinda figured that but when i hit drifts it likes to stand up pretty good but it just seem like the power fades to fast and drops back downsxr70001 said:Just so you know even if you do gear it down a little Yamaha's aren't really known for lifting the skis. They just go!

X2 I can pull and carry skis on my srx700 when I want to but then again a lil more power and fairly lighter in the front. Even on the GFs sxr700 conditions need to just right to get much lift and carry, They are both set up for trail riding. I would imagine with enough tinkering you can get anything to pull the skis!

my bad.
Tranny fluid or gear oil?
I know what your saying about low end power. Would be nice to power up onto some obsticles. I was thinking 2 teeth if I ever did it. But I'm a drag race guy!

90W gear oil would be WAY to thick. Especially in sub zero temps. If you dont want to use the Yamaha chain case lube then the tranny fluid would be a good choice. Or some straight 30W with some Lucas oil stabilizer. (i ve used that combo in the past with good luck)
I have since switched to Polaris chain case lube. Yamaha's would work too....
