how to remove drive belt 76 prestige 440

I am new to the site, and have recently received a good condition(free) 1976 prestige 400 with the hyd. torque conveter instead of a clutch. i was told the recoil was not working. After tearing it part it seems the recoil is fine, but either the motor is locked up or the hyd "clutch" is not releasing as i can't get the motor to turn over. If anybody has any insight or can tell me how to remove the cog drive belt i can at least isolate if its the torque converter or the motor itself.

You need to talk to Ron - HYDRAULICYAM or something like that us his name here as well. He's a walking encyclopedia of all things hydraulic Yamaha snowmobile.
 
well i figured it out, got the belt off, unfortunately one cylinder is really rusted, thats why its seized. oh well it was free so i might try and fix it anyways.
 
Sorry! ..it's year end at work and havn't checked here
since last week. the 76 and 77 PR liked to scoop debris
in the air intake to the recoil...it then gets jambed in front of mag cyl and starts the over heating effect,,,,mice also
like that spot.....you needed to pull motor mount bolts and
slide ahead..or loosen them and move on the little adjusters..
can remove steering shaft and pull engine up but you have to work to hard.....
pull seat, dog house, fuel tank and slide engine out
over the tunnel.....
The crank output end is diff than reg clutch GP440 but
the rest should fit.

They will work with poor compression but both sides
need to be close so the better piston doesn't draw
more fuel...the oil injects into each side of the manifold
and will feed them oil... if you tear it down,change crank
seals..
DONT change the converter oil unless water is present.
They are nasty to burp out the air..Water will boil and
create air and blow the oil out the overflow when it gets
HOT....

about 12 are in chassis.

Do the same to both sides,,,maybe nice to change crankseals
while you have it out...you will need to split lower casings as the
seals have steel outer lips...and remove clutch and mag first.
other wise you could hone both sides and put back together
and check compression....if you are using new gaskets, the set
comes with seals anyway
