1980 EX440D Startup after years of sitting..

Looking for some advise here guys....

I have gone through the carb and fired the Exciter with success. This sled has not ran for several years according to the previous owner. I just acquired it a couple months ago and want to make sure I cover all the bases.

It acts like the primary is stuck as it does engage up to 4000 rpm. I didn't figure I needed to rev it past that. Runs great though!

I'm assuming that the clutches will need to come off and get worked on.

Any ideas of what I should look for or do to get this bad boy up to snuff?

Also, what should the engagement be at for this sled in stock form?

Any help would be appreciated

Yea, I believe my primary must be stuck. It didn't engage at 4000 so there is probably some corrosion keeping things fused......sucks, I was ready for a run through the grass on this thing!
 
might be able to take the belt off and squeeze it closed by your hands.. if you cant,you should take it off and disassemble.. also might want to take off the secondary as well the cam shoes were known for breaking off .. the plastic shoes the cam slides on
 
i'll look in my manual to check engagement. let me know if you need a clutch. i just took one off my 80 exciter.

Yea, after further review it looks like this sled has a Comet clutch that must be locked up due to corrosion. I believe the engagement is supposed to be between 3000 and 3300.

I may be contacting you for a clutch if this one comes off without any surprises....
 
OEM clutch was 2900 to 3300 minimum. Comet was probably a bit higher.Take the clutches apart (remove springs) clean them up, lube the roller and weight pins with something that won't atract dust and give it a go.

Thank opsled for the info. I just hope the clutch comes off the crank fairly easy....probably use some heat...

Does anyone know if I need anything special for a puller or will the one I used to pull the clutch from my 98 SRX work?

The one from your 98 won't work on either the OEM Exciter clutch or the Comet. The Comet and OEM exciter also take different pullers. Both are still available and not that hard to find.

The Comet on my 1980 440 Exciter comes in at 4000 rpm smoothly and consistently. Between the 1979 (before modifications) that I have and the 1977, 1978, and 1981 that my two neighbors own (all 440s), the 1980 is the quickest (acceleration) and fastest (top end- 2 miles+) in powder and on hard pack. This has been the results of literally dozens of races over the past 5 years or so. All sleds are bone stock, except for the Comet on the 1980. The stock clutch can be made to equal- or better- the Comet as I have done that last year. The 79 has been modded via massaging the clutching and cylinders/exhaust and is now easily out of the league of the other sleds.

A generic 102C Comet puller is all you need to pull any 102 Comet.
