Hi, my friend has a vmax 700 -99 and he want to change the piston. The old ones have around 1000km now. So what should he buy? oem? wiseco or spi? I also check ebay and found a kit for $159!! is it just crap?

I have 12000mi on my pistons now so I dont see why you would need to change after only 1000. and Where was that kit? I cant find

i know refresh is not usually done til 3000 miles so with olny 1000 km it should be like new still

search for yamaha venom piston and you find it. And I wrote wrong, mean 10000km, and thats around 6200 miles. He wants to change just in case.

honestly i would go with oem i know there is a difference from wisco and yamaha pistons ..something in the way they are made i have herd of the skirts breakin on non oem pistons cause of this ...

pistons

well over 20,000 on the pistons in my 99 vmax 700, and simons pipes have been on this sled since the third or forth year. never had the engine apart yet. My friend has a 98 700 with over 30,000kms still untouched

Wiseco is a forged aluminum piston. Factory pistons as well as spi are cast. The spi pistons aren't the greatest. The reason the skirts can break on the wiseco is from improper warm up, Or from having a bore out of spec. The forged pistons take longer to warm up and expand so you get slop and the skirts rock in the bore. If it were me, I would probably go with OEM's if you aren't going to to measure the cylinders and or have them re-plated. I put my OEM's back in at 10k miles with new rings, The pistons and cylinder bores were still within spec.

Im ordering the wiseco piston kit on ebay now. $100 cheaper then anywhere else and it comes with the complete gasket kit which that cheap one doesnt even come with. for all yamaha parts I was looking at $500.
