I ordered the race logics templates. Looking them over I notice that the main exhaust port gets wider and taller, closer the the head, which is what I expected. It also makes the two auxilary exhaust ports wider and taller as well, which makes sense, it is just going to be a pain getting the tool in there.

The question I am wondering is for the intake side. It looks like it wants me to cut a "relief" in the skirt of the bore like my 600 cylinders are set up, I am assuming for better flow from the crank case to the ports but I am still skeptical of cutting out that much cylinder without at least seeing what people here think.

I probably explained this horribly and I don't have any pics yet to illustrate. I will take some tonight and post them, but I figured you porting guys would have an idea from my description.
 
I have a set of ported red head 700 cylinders and there is a significant amount of meat cut out of the intake side of the skirt. Have had no issues with it.
 
My buddy ported his engine with those templates many years ago and its held up great!He did the case also and added srx reed blocks.The case he just kinda winged it and removed material where there was obvious restrictions especially after grinding things out to fit the bigger reed blocks in there.
 
Alright, you guys are making me feel confident, which is what I wanted..lol. I am still going to post pics tonight of what I will be taking out so you guys can really see. Swede, funny you mention the viper reeds because I just finished porting my case to accept them.
 
Sweet, I saw my friends when it was apart and where he took more material in the case and it just made sense.He also cheated a little thanks to Lowell Horning who does porting and he has pictures of a ported sx 700 case after his work was done.You have to look around his sight a bit, but its there.I understand he's well known for performance watercraft work ect. in the southwest.
 
Swede, you the man!! I checked out his site and saw the pics, it was on an srx case and cylinders, but alot of the same stuff.
 
Sx600Abuser are you using an air grinder or a fordom tool(shaft driven) If you are using air you may want to look into an angle head pencil grinder to help get you into the transfer ports. Do a google search for Wholesale tool as they are located here in MI and have these in stock and should make you life much easier plus they also have cutters that you'll need.

Good call, I am going to give it a shot with the air grinder, I have a right angle and a straight. I have a good assortment of bur tools, if I can't get it comfortably with that, then we have pencil grinders at work. I will just have to pick a saturday to do it. Thanks for making me think of those, I didn't even consider using them until now.

Does this increase fuel consumption (cruising, of course WOT will increase) significantly, make it sensitive to weather changes, or give it a hit and miss propensity to blow up? Is it worth much on a single pipe?
 
The porting that is being done is actually relatively safe. The ports and passages that are being opened are helping with efficiency of air flow. The ports mainly get widened and raised slightly keeping the operating rpm around the same level where it currently is. Basically what is happening here is the motor is going to breathe through a fire hose vs. Breathing through a garden hose. Most users are very happy with the results and have heard very little complaints of finickyness to weather changes.
 
Are many of said users still on a single pipe? I'm staying single for a couple reasons, so if this porting gives a good boost it'll definitely make it to the to-do list at only $89.
 
Works well either way... With a single or mulitple pipes. You will have to adjust your clutching as you are going to make more power.
 
Your doing a good job so far, I hope you dont mind a couple suggestions, I did some "paint" on your pics in areas where I would spend a bit more time to make your job come together. :2strokes: On the cylinder pic:

a.)grind the floor from side to side in a tapered(exh port opening at flange) flat area

b.)remove the humps on eash side of the floor

c.)make sure you get the exh booster ports opened up all the way thru with a nice radius top/bottom edges from inside to exh port opening.

d.)open up your exh port outlet to be the same as the gasket is, most imtes on a redhead, you open them up quite a bit, they were really mismatched in size.

Case:

1.)I would run a round taper on the bottom of the case opening up into the area of case opening

2.)taper the sides of your skirts to allow the round tunnel ports to operate without a square edge in there, make the opening a little closer to the opening on case, your close there already.

The motor will move alot more air with this being done and will require bigger jetting to go with it, hope you ground out the sides for the srx/viper reed blocks. Jetting should be around 148-low 150's mains,needles on 3 , 45 pilots in winter riding. You still want to use a set of reed spacers. This is all still very noticeable on a single pipe engine, they pull alot of clutch weight over stock. Never had one on the pump as theres not much r/r going into redheads anymore but they make very respectable power gain. Your doing a good job keep up the good work! ;)!

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I picked this kit because I read from many online that this porting works well with a single pipe, as I will be sticking with a single.

I really apprieciate the feedback. I will be doing the changes you recommended. I am curious more about what you recommended for jetting. Do you think a single pipe will need that much jet? Race logics says you shouldn't have to change your jetting if I remember right, which I don't believe but I thought maybe I would start out with the stock jetting seeing is how that is usually on the fat side anyway. Based off that, would you tell me not to waste my time and just bump them up?

X2, no expert either but you also swapped to srx cages, opened your cases up, and once you open up per mrvipers suggestions racelogics jetting recommendations are basically out the window.

Key word is piped. I'm not saying that he isn't going to need bigger than what Race Logic states, a lot of times they give you a "starting point" and you have to adjust from there. The dirt bikes that I have ported had to be jetted leaner than the stock settings as they went way fat after porting. Just my experience, and I realize sleds are different than bikes.

sx600abuser, youll need the mains in the area I have suggested or you will have engine failure, built alot of those with the single pipe. Race logic is not taking into account the case work and larger reed cages(moves alot more air, when you add air, you have to add fuel), because they are selling you only a cylinder template not case porting specs. If you dont jet it up you will not run it for long without engine failure....

also, peel 1 layer from the headgasket when you reassemble it to get back your lost compression from porting the exh. port.
